A Medieval fairytale

Ciana has loved Oran all her life and nothing, not even her father will prevent them from being together. But the Mayor of Stonemark has higher aspirations for his daughter than the village blacksmith. He engages the help of a witch and dark magic to bend Ciana to his will.
Oran knows that he doesn’t deserve Ciana. But their love is stronger than the metal he forges and welds. She has his heart and he will never turn from her no matter the cost.
They plan to run away and start a new life far beyond her father’s reach. But their escape comes too late.
Separated, Ciana will need all her strength to journey through the deep forest and save Oran from the witch’s curse. Alone and with only a trail of black feathers to follow, Ciana will fight against the odds and attempt to bring her lover home.

Black is the Colour by Nicole Hurley-Moore
Book review by Nicole McCurdy
5 *****
I’ve read very few medieval set romances although I do love my historical books I tend to play it safe in Regency times so I was pleasantly surprised with Nicole Hurley-Moore’s tale of forbidden romance between the upper echelon of society- the mayor’s wayward and free-spirited daughter Ciana and the humble and lower ranked but devilishly handsome blacksmith Oran.
With elements of the supernatural weaved throughout this story Nicole manages to portray the ruthless misogynistic views men had of women in those times as Ciana and her sisters are nothing more than objects to be bartered or sold at whim or in business dealings as feelings and familial love or responsibility plays no part in the higher classes. It is the stunning beauty and love story of Ciana and Oran that elevates this tale of intrigue and witchcraft and romance into something epic. It may be short in length but Black is the Colour manages to pack an immense amount of adventure and heroism into it.
Ultimately the most refreshing part of this book is the fact that it may be set in medieval times but there is no damsel in distress or white knight upon his stead, Ciana is the strong-willed independent and free spirited heroine that needs to be written about in more books. It is her inner beauty, bravery and stubbornness and love for Oran that leads her on a dangerous journey to rescue the man she loves from the demented clutches of the sorceress Esmerina.
Oran too is a well rounded and very well structured character. He loves Ciana fiercely and enough for a thousand lifetimes but his weakness is his self-depreciating nature and inability to believe in himself or indeed the love that he and Ciana share as right from the beginning he believes he does not deserve the beauty and grace of someone so elevated in status. He does try to persuade Ciana that he is no good for her but to no avail.
“Nay, it was wrong. You know we have no future together. It does not matter how much we love each other. Why torment ourselves with what will never be?”
“Is that what I do to you Oran? Do I torment you?”
“Aye, with every breath in every moment. I do not have the right to love you. These rough hands are that of a peasant’s. What kind of life can I offer you?”
It takes the plot of an evil witch and a manipulative and vengeful father with the heroism and adoration these two have for one another to decide if they really do get a shot at a happily ever after. Black is the Colour is a terrifically written piece of historical romance with a grand mix of paranormal, drama, mystery and fantasy and of course a stunning love story. Watch out for the crow scene- a masterfully written piece of fiction. I can’t wait to read the next book from Nicole. A definite five stars from me.
5.0 out of 5 stars captured my imagination and wouldn't let go until I finished Nov. 23 2014

Format: Kindle Edition
I received a copy of this book as part of a Spotlight/Review tour asking for my honest review.

Black is the Colour reminds me of the fairytale stories that I read while growing up. It's a bit darker and definitely a bit sexier than what a child should read, but it had that feel, and that is what I absolutely loved about reading this story.

It actually feels a bit like Romeo and Juliette meets Medieval Disney Princess, with a bit of Celtic lore thrown in. It made for a unique and intriguing read that I couldn't put down.

There were bits of the story that I would have loved more information to explain the "lore" that was being referenced, but I feel that it was well developed overall. The characters matched up well with the story and I loved how the hero and heroine accepted each other as they were.

The editing seemed to fall apart later in the story as I noticed more errors, but it wasn't overly distracting from the story. In addition, this story is written in British English, which could be distracting for American readers as words such as "colour" (color) will appear misspelled.

I give "Black is the Colour" 5 stars for the pure fact it captured my imagination and wouldn't let go until I finished reading the entire book.
5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful medieval fairy tale! Oct. 31 2014

Lovers of paranormal romance, with a touch of magic, will love BLACK IS THE COLOUR, nicely written by Nicole Hurley-Moore. Perfect introduction in her new series Tales from the Hearthfire, the story of three sisters Ciana, Mariella and Elisabetta. If you are looking a great quick read, just sit back, relax and follow Ciana and Oran's journey, set in medieval which it's filled with magic, curse and a witch! It's the fantastic love story of Ciana, the loving, caring and headstrong daughter of the Mayor of Stonemark and Oran, the village's gentle blacksmith. In this short novella, you will discover that they were meant for each other, whatever happens, Ciana will do anything for HER man. Will love break the curse put upon Oran? I really loved this paranormal! I'm excited to read her next novella MY WOLVEN HEART, Mariella's story. I recommend this beautiful, sweet and charming fairy tale.
