Product Description

Product Description

From acclaimed director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Hannibal) and renowned producer Jerry Bruckheimer (Pearl Harbor, Armageddon) comes a gripping true story about bravery, camaradarie and the complex reality of war. Black Hawk Down stars an exceptional cast including Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor), Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge!), Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan), Eric Bana (Chopper), William Fichtner (The Perfect Storm), Ewen Bremner (Snatch) and Sam Shepard (All The Pretty Horses). In 1993, an elite group of American Rangers and Delta Force soldiers are sent to Somalia on a critical mission to capture a violent warlord whose corrupt regime has lead to the starvation of hundreds of thousands of Somalis. When the mission goes terribly wrong, the men find themselves outnumbered and literally fighting for their lives.

Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down conveys the raw, chaotic urgency of ground-force battle in a worst-case scenario. With exacting detail, the film re-creates the American siege of the Somalian city of Mogadishu in October 1993, when a 45-minute mission turned into a 16-hour ordeal of bloody urban warfare. Helicopter-borne U.S. Rangers were assigned to capture key lieutenants of Somali warlord Muhammad Farrah Aidid, but when two Black Hawk choppers were felled by rocket-propelled grenades, the U.S. soldiers were forced to fend for themselves in the battle-torn streets of Mogadishu, attacked from all sides by armed Aidid supporters. Based on author Mark Bowden's bestselling account of the battle, Scott's riveting, action-packed film follows a sharp ensemble cast in some of the most authentic battle sequences ever filmed. The loss of 18 soldiers turned American opinion against further involvement in Somalia, but Black Hawk Down makes it clear that the men involved were undeniably heroic. --Jeff Shannon --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The movie itself was quite well done... Ridley Scott's quite at ease with the war themes, even though Steven Spielberg may have the upper hand in terms of perfection and more, Scott delivers nonetheless a savage, uncompromising vision of what happened in Somalia, although most characters feel unanimously the same written with different names, but the events and the society of Somalia truly were unsettling in themselves, and so it was amazing what they did to show us all the horrors of what they have lived through.

Special features are, to put simply: a perfect assembled package. Three discs boasting a proud and informative as well as entertaining content. You also have History Channel and PBS documentary on the actual events, showing quite tough footage, and a 150-minute long documentary on the making of the film, as well as several more interviews, featurettes, deleted scenes... the list goes one, but this is an edition fans of the movie SHOULD seek out before it's not available anymore.

Sure, Black Hawk Down may not be the best in Ridley Scott's filmography, but it sure is powerful filmmaking, showing skillful performances and more. This DVD edition dates from back when special editions still had a future and still delivered on all fronts.

I have enjoyed this movie multiple times. It is frustrating and even funny and doesn't pull any punches. It probably has an underlying racist theme that should have been explored as it is definitely white against black. Easy to spot a young Tom Hardy.

I owned the original release of this DVD and, thanks to this new release, I now own the deluxe version. Needless to say, this speaks volumes over how much I love this film. I'm not a particularly big fan of war films but this movie really hit an emotional chord with me and I consider it one of my favorite films ever. It is a truly powerful film.
However, this review isn't about the film itself. Hundreds of people before me have already done that. I am reviewing the DELUXE DVD version, which I must say was well worth the wait.
If you are a fan of any of actors of this film, then the special features will be a major treat. The main members of the cast (approx. 20 actors) - from Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, Sam Shepard, Eric Bana and Jason Isaacs to up-and-comers Hugh Dancy, Matthew Marsden and Orlando Bloom get a major boost in this DVD. The 2 1/2 hour "Essence of Combat" documentary alone is worth the price of the dvd. It is packed with fabulous behind-the-scenes features, candid interviews and footage featuring the screenwriter (Ken Nolan), book author (Mark Bowden), director (Ridley Scott), special effects guys, composer (Hans Zimmer), military/technical consultants, cast members and even the actual soldiers who were involved in the mission. There are approx. 9 deleted scenes, most of which were a shame to not have been included in the final film. There are also photo galleries, loads of commentaries and many more!!!
If you are a fan of the film itself or want to know more about the events surrounding the Somalian conflict, there are two excellent TV documentaries from PBS and the History channel that would do just that.
I highly recommend this DELUXE DVD to fans of the film as well as fans of the actors involved.

Great presentation. Regardless of how you feel about the film and it's subject matter, the video and audio are top notch here. Quality 1080p transfer with enough film grain to retain the gritty nature of the conflict in the film. Devestating surround audio effects - highly recommended for home theater systems. Helicopter sequences are especially good. Also includes interesting special features, making of documentaries which, like most, are in standard definition that look and sound crappy!

"Black Hawk Down" is a story of great nobility, moving sacrifice, and repulsive brutality. It's a story of the horrors of war, but also of the courage and dedication of men who heroically give all they had to accomplish their assigned task. The film is viscerally anti-war, and inspiringly pro-soldier. It's a moving and challenging story to watch.

Director Ridley Scott's goal was to convey what the soldiers endured on this ill-fated campaign, and he succeeds. Several of the one-star reviews here found the action unbelievable, yet the facts of the battle are well documented. The script is based on Mark Bowden's exhaustively researched book. The film's nearest cinematic cousin is "Saving Private Ryan." It has the same unflinching stare at the brutality of combat, the same realization that the fundamental loyalty of a soldier is to the man fighting next to him. The characters here are a true ensemble; there's no Tom Hanks figure standing at the centre. "Black Hawk Down" is about the men, not a man.

If you have an interest in owning "Black Hawk Down," this is the package to own, even more than a Blu-ray edition. The DVD presentation looks and sounds great. It's easy to see why this won Oscars for editing and sound.

Why prefer the 3-disk DVD over a hi-def Blu-ray? This set's extensive commentary and background supplements make the difference. Disk two features a comprehensive making-of feature full of fascinating information about things like how the actors learned to move like soldiers and how the crash scenes looked so very real. My respect for the film grew after seeing the craft that went into it. Disk three features *two* historical documentaries totalling more than two and a half hours detailing the reality behind the film.
