Product Description

I am loyal, but I will betray you.
I am strong, but I have scars.
I am an angel, but the devil.
I met her when I was sixteen and she was a breath of fresh air. She swooped in, making me smile. But then she left, taking my next breath with her.
Her smile could light up a room, making my black heart pitter patter.
I found her again ten years later, with a syringe in her arm.
Blood coming from between her legs.
She was broken and I was glad she was broken. She wouldn't think less of me and my damaged ways.

5+ stars. Reviewed on behalf of A Book Lover’s Emporium book blog

Well, OMFG where the hell do I begin with this mind &%*£ that is Black.

I absolutely loved this book and the turbulent rollercoaster ride it takes you on. I gasped, almost cried, shouted and wanted to throw my kindle when it ended. I don’t want to say too much and ruin the awesome read that this is as you really need to find out for yourself just how brilliant it is. This is the first book by T.L Smith I’ve read and I really cannot understand why I have not found her before.

It follows Black, a tall, bearded, built, gorgeous enigma who is a hitman for hire and the best at his job. He is a busy soul who has no time for friends, family (not having any) or timewasters. Then he sees her. The one who disappeared 10 years ago without a trace, left him alone after making him feel. She’s high as a kite, bleeding from between her legs and is staring at him, pleading with him to help her (he thinks) until she fights for more drugs. Does she recognise him and should he save her after she left him??

Rose. Ahh poor, not so innocent Rose. Broken and bruised (literally) and ready to give up on the world until she seems to have been given another chance by him. The boy she loved at the tender age of 16 before her world was turned upside down and inside out, leaving him and herself behind in the process.

Can two lost, completely broken and f*&^%d up people really mend each other or are they destined to be a disaster waiting to happen?

I warn you now this has a kind of cliffhanger ending as the next book is in the pipeline but even if you are not good at waiting for the next instalment – which I am NOT – please read this book regardless!

GAH!!!!!! After I finished reading this, I ask myself, “Elle, Elle, Elle, why do you do this to yourself??? Why don’t you pay close attention to the cover or the blurb??? How do you miss the crucial part where it says it’s a series?!?!? Now you just finished another book with a crazy cliffhanger ending and you’re left hanging, again?!?!? *runs to Goodreads and read the book details again* Wait!!! It doesn’t say anything about series anywhere?!? SONOFA…

TL, TL, why o why must you do this to me?!?

I’d say you can read the blurb over and over again and you still won’t be prepared for the ride that you’re in for. So I say just dive right in!

There’s enough depth to both characters. Rose is a broken character. She’s fragile but she showed strength. For all the messed up stuff she’s been thru, she managed to rise above it. Black is a fascinating H, or antihero. His profession and his history guarantee that. All the emotions are buried deep, deep down. Stoic but feels strong emotions. Despite the evil that surrounds him or lives in him, I saw what Rose saw in him.

The story itself, or certain parts of it, is familiar, giving me the feeling of having read it before, yet unique enough to make me wonder where it’s going.

And now you probably wonder why I didn’t rate it higher. Frankly, I really wanted to, I really did!

There’s too a succinct feeling to it that I couldn’t shake off, which I really wished I could’ve because I felt it prevented me from completely connecting. I also really wished that their history included Rose’s POV because I felt it didn’t allow me to fully buy into Rose’s feelings about Black. I felt like I missed something important to make me understand her younger self better.

I received this ARC of Black from T.L.Smith in exchange for an honest and spoiler free review.

If your a fan of dark reads, well this book could be classified as such. From a scale of one to ten it would be a 6 for dark. In reading this story, one needs to leave their morals at the door. It can be rough with plenty of killings and mention of drug addiction. I will give this book a 4 star review.

It's about a man named Black who is an hired hit man, and Rose who was unknowingly a victim in a crazy plot that cost her the freedom on choice. Black will do anything to protect Rose in order that she can get back her freedom.

The plot was well thought out and well executed. It was a little difficult for me to get attached to the characters because they showed so little emotions. It does end rather abruptly but their is one last entry that probably suggests a future book in the works. I would recommend this book for the fans of Dark reads.

Firstly love the cover and as reading through I could so picture Black come to life from the pages.

What I loved was the way these two characters emotions fed off each other, the storyline was really easy to follow, backgrounds from Liam and Rose when they first meet and their ongoing friendship given at the right moments to help you connect and then also great supporting characters who played their parts in their lives. Black is definitely twisted to a degree and he has so many secrets and is truly a bit stalker like with Rose but she is so fragile and I really relished how we got to see her repair her life from the ground up because lets be honest she was in a dark place and then right up to the end even with all the heartache and drama thrown her way. This is a dark read, it has death, drug use, prostitution and some hard to read violent scenes but all within relevance to how the story progresses.

Again, TL manages to twist and turn the story to have you believing you know the ending to only throw you towards another conclusion. I was well and truly wrapping this story up in a nice little bow thinking I had outsmarted the author and slap me down we are given a hint of perhaps new beginnings – this is so typical of TL’s writing and why I know every time I pick up one of her books I will enjoy it and wonder what she is going to throw at me the reader. This is my third book I have read by the author and again cannot fault her story, characters or the way it is told.

I was given an arc by the author.

HASH(0x9ec42348) out of 5 stars Interesting Read. Jan. 29 2016

This is a really hard book to review for me. Black, told from the first person points of view of both the hero and heroine, took me for a wild ride. Contemporary romance surrounded by dark subject matter, the story of Black and Rose is a complicated web of betrayals, depravity, and hard subject matter shrouded in mystery.

The two main characters of this book and their plights intrigued me throughout. Black himself is very cold, detached, and emotionless which I truly felt and even connected. His presence is consuming and while he has an air of danger surrounding him the promise of his protection wraps you in a net of safety. His warnings of the kind of man he is are as unheeded by the reader as they are to Rose. Rose is desperate, longing and in need of love and care which as the reader I also felt and connected with. Her life is not pretty, it's the most grotesque part of the book, in my opinion, yet without it we wouldn't feel as strongly about her. The meat of the plot, the complex history coupled with the present provides a great story-one in which you want to sit down and just absorb.

The problem for me is the execution of this complex plot and the style of writing. I often found myself very confused as to what was happening with the characters and how certain actions even come to fruition. A lack of clear transitions and underdeveloped tangents of plot were found throughout the story. Structurally the writing is quite different for me. At times where I think the story was supposed to be cloaked in mystery it came off as confusing. There are few spots where plot points were never finished or inconsistent with previous action.

Black overall was on OK read for me. I'm intrigued to the point that I want to know where the story will go and see how the characters find their way. It's for fans of darker subject matter.

I LOVE Black – I loved reading about Black so very much that I immediately started collecting other works by TL Smith. Black was a one sitting, late into the night read that left me sleepless.

There’s something about once in a while rooting for the ultimate bad boy – a REALLY REALLY bad boy – that’s so energizing. Black isn’t noble and he works for really bad people and does really bad things, but Black has a place in my “literary world” of would be hero’s and even if he’s irredeemable, I need to know him. I’m practically doing a full re-read to write this review. Our other lead character, Rose, has a heartbreaking story and is very near her end when the story hits the present time.

So I’ll just get it out there – if you like a dark romantic suspense read Black is a #MustRead. The writing is solid and the dialogue fits the characters so well. And OH the PLOT! Smith leads us down a few roads, leading us to make assumptions about the characters, how they got where they got and why. There’s a few flashback moments, one with Black when he still called himself Liam that explains a lot about the direction his life was going when they met. Black and Rose have a short but rocky history. As Liam he was her only friend in high-school. But 5 years later, he becomes her reluctant savior. Her entrance back into his life is unwelcome at best. And boy did my heart ache for Rose. How she ended up where she did makes for some tummy twisting moments. So much of the story is about her recovery and Black is essential to it – he’s her new, but welcome, addiction.

There’s a great group of secondary characters that both support and antagonize our hero and heroine. There aren’t too many surprises about who and what these characters are. The good ones stay good, and the bad stay bad. But it’s where their action take us that matters most. I’m romantic with unreasonable expectations but Smith does right by the characters and makes them work for it. There’s quite a lot of suspense and some very hard images, brutal in fact, that make this story edgy and heartbreaking. The epilogue is disconcerting and then we are left with one stellar cliffhanger. I’m feeling a potentially unhealthy obsession over TL Smith’s writing right now. How have I never read anything by her yet? I’m happy it was Black that changed that situation and now must wait patiently for book 2…

HASH(0x9fae47d4) out of 5 stars WOW! Beyond Brilliant!!!! Jan. 29 2016

T.L. Smith took me on a journey so deep, dark and gut wrenching that I couldn't fathom what was going to come next. Staying true to her style of writing, she kept me on my toes right until the very last page and definitely threw in some twists. This book is told in dual POV.

Rose and Black were everything to each other. He was the untouchable bad boy at school, she was from the popular crowd but in one night that all changed. Their friendship was fast becoming dependency, so when she is unexpectedly pulled away from his world a darkness surrounds him.

Moving forward ten years later, Black is standing face to face with half the woman Rose used to be. Now a drug addict, living her life surrounded by an MC and in danger, Rose will do anything for her next hit to forget the past she is running from. But she is yet to realize the man standing in front of her is someone from her past.

“The Scream was like black calling black loneliness calling loneliness. I didn’t understand it, but I needed to find the source of it.”

Helping her to clean up her act as quick as possible is what Black needs to do. He doesn't want Rose seeing what he has become or even remembering who he is. The ups and downs of inner turmoil that he faces are brutal and frustrating. His self worth is nothing, he can’t bare for her to see him like this. He is the lowest of low, the bottom of the ladder, he is a hit man.

Slowly Rose and Black work with each other to repair themselves both with their own demons from the past and present. With everything coming to light can they both reveal their true selves to one another and start living a better life? Or will their secrets keep knocking them down?

"They say I bring nothing but black, darkness. Though, when I'm with you, all I see is color, and f**k, its the best thing I've ever seen, Rose"

I cannot even begin to explain what this book did to me. The cover, the blurb, the context of the book...everything is just brilliant. T.L. has a true gift, one that reaches inside of you to your very core and splits you open. She will have your heart racing, breaking and swooning. Black and Rose’s story is not one for the faint hearted, but then again none of T.L.’s books are. The major cliffy that this book leaves you on is everything and more! It leaves you just begging for more but at the same time, I am happy to let my imagination run wild with all the possibilities.

Heroine was a ridiculous doormat idiot. Story was ok but farfetched, without sufficient details to make the horrific abuse suffered by heroine believable or even logical.

This was terrible and the author doesn't say it's part one! If you like your H being protective. This is not a book for you. The H watches.the h get smacked and kicked and her kid taken from her and drives away and doesn't talk to her again until the h runs into him. And the ending???the worst!of course he has amnesia and misses 5 years with his kid and is with another woman. That killed it for me. Hate cheating even if the author thinks using amnesia as the reason. Won't read another book from this author
