All that eighteen-year old Oliva Magdalena Delgado ever wanted to do was to escape her impoverished childhood ,her abusive parents, and her Afro-Mexican, Spanish, and Indian ancestry. When Oliva gets involved with a one-night stand with her friend Pillar's brother and becomes pregnant, Oliva decides this is the perfect time to get out of Fresno, California and to the big city dreams of Los Angeles. Oliva quickly takes on a new identity and is on the hunt for a rich suitor that will give her the lap of luxury that she feels she deserves. Oliva, now Olivia Machado, is hired by property management tycoon Gino Valente. Gino is quickly smitten with Olivia. Gino and Olivia soon marry and have three daughters, Lourdes, and twins Sofia and Isabella. Olivia thinks that she finally has the life she's always dreamed of until Gino's brother becomes suspicious of Olivia's background. More than twenty-five years later, Olivia and Lourdes travel together around the world in search of wealthy men to keep up with their lavish lifestyle. Sofia is now a successful spa owner and is still reeling from a failed relationship until she meets sexy attorney Javier. Will Sofia give Javier a chance? Isabella would give anything to have a normal mother-daughter relationship with Olivia. She might get her chance when Olivia and Lourdes comes back in town for Isabella and Sophia's 25th birthday. But is Olivia and Lourdes coming back to town to reunite with their family or are they trying to get their hands on the twins multi-million dollar inheritance? All hell breaks loose when the secrets of Olivia's past finally come to light. Will she survive the fallout?

Blinding Mirror is an exceptional thriller by Shelley Halima. Halima expertly weaves a multi-generational, multi-ethnic tale of suspense and intrigue. This novel takes you on an emotional journey as you see how Olivia grows from an impoverished teen to a selfish, gold-digging socialite. Readers will see how Olivia's actions had a devastating effect on Lourdes, Sophia, and Isabella's lives. Halima does a wonderful job of exposing readers to Afro-Mexican, Spanish, Indian, Maltese, and Portuguese cultures something that's rarely found in today's fiction market. High family drama, self-hatred of one's culture, and detrimental lies makes Blinding Mirror a captivating read. This novel is a sensational start to the Mirror series.

This book is filled with horrible people doing horrible things with some soft porn thrown in on the side. But it is so well written, I couldn't stop reading it. Who says everything you read must be worthwhile? Enjoy!

1.0 out of 5 stars Trite and stupid April 27 2012

This book is not worth reading at all. It is so poorly edited that one character' Betty, undergoes an inexplicable last name change between chapters. Not to mention there are dozens of omitted words. The story itself is written in an adolescent style and seems to be bits of many trite, tired, and cliche ridden streotypical tales strung tediously together. I kept waiting for something worth reading to happen, but alas, no luck there. And then there's a second book with more oh the same...ugh! A big waste of time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Imitation of Life June 24 2012

Format: Paperback
Oliva Delgado left her name, her ethnicity and life behind in Fresno, California, and started anew as Olivia Machado in Los Angeles. She built a new life very similar to a house of cards; one lie stacked on top of another. And like a house of cards, her façade is in danger of collapsing.

It's been a while since a character has made me want to jump into a book and whip on them. Oliva/Olivia is one such character. Shelley Halima did a great job of creating a character you loved to hate. Yet, at times, you couldn't help but feel sorry for her. Signs of a good writer.

I enjoyed the ethnic flavor of "Blinding Mirror." With so many books today being so black and white (pun intended), this was refreshing. The pace was good and the story kept my interest. There were a few quirks in the editing but not enough to prove too distracting.

Shelley Halima's "Blinding Mirror" (I didn't get the title or cover, though.) is a good read and easily recommendable. For me, it was reminiscent of "Imitation of Life" with a gold-digging twist. I look forward to "Crimson Mirror."

5.0 out of 5 stars Long but good Dec 7 2014

This was a great long interesting story. I could not stop reading this book from the moment I started it. I am glad that there is will be a part 2 to this story to tell what happened to all of the characters. That Olivia...smh such a hard life she had to go through and all the he'll she put other in. It all proves that when you lie you have to not only remember that lie but add some more lies to it....eventually you will get caught.
Anyways back to this particular story at hand. The author included a great balance of detail and dialogue in this story. Everything was told I'll in such a way that the readers would not have to guess what happened to the other characters. Even though it was due to a bad situation I'm glad that the 2 sisters were there for their other sister. I hope that Olivia does not die ..I hope she is able to face her demons and let go of all of her anger and pain.
Also I enjoyed reading about the life of the girls' mother as helped me understand why she did what she did.
To the author: great job.
