Blood Glucose Monitors
A blood glucose monitor is a home testing system for detecting the concentration of glucose in the blood. This is essential knowledge for those with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, as it allows diabetics to monitor their sugar levels and alter their insulin intake and diet accordingly. The most common type of blood glucose monitor requires a drop of blood to be deposited onto a test strip and inserted into the mechanism, however there are strip free options available for purchase too.
Blood glucose monitors can help those who are diabetic or pre-diabetic to analyze how their diet and exercise regimes alter blood glucose levels. Using one is a quick and easy way to regulate diabetic treatment on a day to day basis, as it illustrates whether blood glucose is crucially high or low. Normal fasting blood glucose levels, i.e. the level in the morning before any food is consumed, should fall between 70-110 mg/dL or 4.0 to 6.0 mmol/L, and they should stay between these two values throughout the day, spiking only after a meal. If the blood glucose monitor shows a high reading, then it allows diabetics to increase the amount of insulin in their daily treatment. Likewise, if the reading shows a low level it indicates that less insulin is required and, perhaps, an increase in glucose intake.
