2014's "Different Shades of Blue" was brilliant, another JB triumph. 2016 "Blues of Desperation" once again proves that JB can totally nail any project he releases.

This legendary virtuoso goes one louder with this his 12th studio release, reasserting his rock credentials and the results are a true testament to his versatility as an artist, from blues to rock to funk to blues to rock, he rules in all of his genres.

"This Train" roars out of the gates, rocking the house, Anton Fig on drums with dual drummer Greg Morrow set up the percussive power that thunders through all tracks, unstoppable ! Reese Wynan's excellent piano work as always is remarkable combined with the background bass power of Michael Rhodes, classic.

"The sound here is bigger, bolder and brighter than what has come before and it's clear that, from the first moments of 'This Train', Joe is firing on all cylinders.

JB's long time producer Kevin Shirley is back behind the boards, a proven partnership, keeping everything crisp and clean with the voice and guitar always at the forefront.

The modern blues king deals out his usual gnarly riffs and stinging lead breaks. I love the quiet, laid back recurring groove of my favorite track "Drive" where Joe lulls you and then slowly builds to the crashing solo.

True innovation, both the blues purist and hardcore rock enthusiast can fully appreciate. Lots of swagger, contrasting numbers, and full of surprises, this one is a richly rewarding album.

JB rules.

It's Joe whats not to love. This album seems not so much blues but rock and lighter on the solos for Joe. Love the moody Lets Drive. I really like he does an extensive inner sleeve and lists what guitars he uses. Delivery was great.

Another great offering from JB, every track is great, crisp, fresh and well produced. Great mix of songs in a variety of blues styles and tempos. Strong vocals. Superb electric and acoustic guitar work as always but JB has the humility to let the other band members shine through on each track without everything being completely dominated by his guitar and vocal work, so some great keyboard, drum, bass and horn work here too. I've listened to this several times at searing volume and as low background music and it works either way. Recommended buy for any modern blues collection.

His albums keep getting better every time. The webisodes he does on the making of are very informative and sheds a great look on his process with his long time producer Kevin Shirley. His band he picks for these albums are always the finest blue players for that project.
A great selection of songs again on this album.
Looking forward to seeing him live his November in Toronto.

JB is showing us his exploratory side, there's a different kind of sound here and a sort of searching leitmotif. A great guitarist for sure with his own style, but as he has admitted before, he has the propensity to play too many notes sometimes. Soulful voice and selective guitar licks and phrases make some of the songs work well, others are mediocre. His artistry continues to grow.

As always a great new release I was looking forward to and didn't disappoint. Great track called RIDE which I think will open up more avenues for Joe and hopefully new listeners.

I actually was disappointed with this. I have quite a few of his other albums, and am a big blues fan but this one left me flat. I expected much more!
