The story before the love story….

When he lost the only woman he’d ever loved, it seemed there was nothing left to live for.

Even as a boy, all Ben Covington ever wanted was to spend forever with Dahlia London, the beautiful girl next door...then one life-altering decision tore them apart and he was forced to leave her.

Now, despite having returned to win her back, he’s still alone. She’s with someone else—someone she’s never going to leave.

Resigned to a future without his former girlfriend, Ben numbs his broken heart in a haze of liquor and women. But then the only woman who ever even turned his head while he was with his girl reappears unexpectedly. And he’s never forgotten their one incredible night together. But will Ben’s destructive behavior destroy his future with her before it even begins?

WOW WOW WOW....the wonderful Kim Karr has done it again. She has written another great read. Blurred: A Connections Novella continues the story of Ben Covington who we saw in the Connected and Torn books. He is searching for his place and identity after coming back to "reality" and coming to terms with his life or lack thereof. Without giving too much away, this story is a prequel to the book Frayed and explains how Ben really never got over his "one night stand" with Belle....River's sister. This novella was brilliantly written to entice us into reading Frayed and let me tell you it worked because I can not wait for this book to read more about Ben and Belle. This gave us enough insight into Ben's life and how he was struggling to find his own meaning. It was filled with so many emotions that made you feel that Ben was truly a good person and certainly deserved a second chance. This is definitely a must read before diving into Frayed and it has earned more then 5 stars for keeping up intrigued the whole way through. Kim did a brilliant job with this novella and she has opened the door for us to want to read more about Ben's story. Thank you Kim as always for a job well done!!!! I can't wait for Frayed!!!!! <3

3.75 stars-- BLURRED is the latest novella in Kim Karr’s contemporary, new adult Connections series. This is Ben Covington’s story-more of a build up to the present-with flashbacks and memories. Blurred also runs parallel to some of the timeline in Mended (Connections #3).

Told from first person POV (Ben) BLURRED follows Ben in the days, weeks, months and years from the time he met Dahlia, through his time spent in New York, and to the present where he will (once again) meet the woman with whom he had a one night affair back in college.

Kim Karr takes the reader on a journey where one man will hit rock bottom-falling fast and hard-following his return to California where the life he once loved has all but been destroyed. As a journalist Ben was caught up in a story that affected every part of his life and to keep the people he loved safe from harm, Ben did the unthinkable. Upon his return he was unprepared for the fallout and the changes that accompanied his return. From New York to California to Australia and back, we are pulled into the mayhem and destruction that has become part of Ben’s every day life. And like a fine line that has been ‘blurred’ Ben actions, whether intentional or not, have not gone unnoticed.

As for Ben hitting rock bottom, the vehicle used to ‘show’ his drop left me with feelings of unease. What happened appeared to be out of character-an act I felt was used to test the tepid waters of erotic literature and not something I felt belonged in this particular story or series.

BLURRED is the introduction to Ben Covington’s story. From a respected and award winning to journalist to finding himself in a position to ask for help, Ben is a man whose difficult and sometimes poorly made choices have hurt those that he loves.

I'm bored with Ben myself. I think he was thoughtless & selfish for what he did to Dahlia & his family. This was kinda a pity party for Ben trying to get back to where he once was & wanted to be. Hoping Frayed will finally put this to rest w/S'Belle. But now he's playing with fire again.

I love, love, love Kim Karr's Connections Series. River Wilde is to die for in Connected and Torn. Then there was Jagger in we got to read Xander Wilde's story in Mended.....and oh how I loved Xander, but...the one guy I was never crazy about was Ben Covington. Now you'll have to read the story to understand who Ben is, what role he plays, and what he does and has done. Well, Blurred has totally changed my mind about Ben. I loved the way Kim Karr gives her readers insight into Ben's side of the story....and well, Ben is definitely a hottie. He's pretty much hit rock bottom in this novella, but things begin to look up and I cannot wait to read more of his story in Frayed. Now while all the hot guys in this series are just "YUMMY," they wouldn't be who they are without their leading ladies, all of which I loved and rooted for, and could more than hold their own against these Wilde men.
Romance that is sizzling hot, guys that will melt your panties right off of you, and stories that keep you captivated from beginning to end.......The Connection Series by Kim Karr has it all. Check it out. I hope you love it as much as I do.

Spoiler-free review

Ben Covington had it all and then lost it. One decision changed his life. He faked his death and left everything behind to keep his fiancé safe from a drug cartel. I’m sure you know the story if you have read the other books in the Connected series. If you are reading this review, you are probably curious to see if it’s worth it to pick up this novella…my answer is YES!

In Blurred, we finally get to learn Ben’s backstory as well his thoughts on the aftermath that ensued when he came back from the dead. Ben’s life turned into a blur, and this novella gives us Ben’s story through his eyes. His poor choices caused some gut-wrenching emotional damage for others, but now we get to see the real Ben. I always wondered what Ben was thinking and feeling…was he just a cheater frat boy just trying to catapult his career or was there something more?

“I don’t even know who I am anymore. I’m alone and left to pick up the pieces to a life I don’t have. Rock bottom. It’s a phrase I never thought I’d use to describe myself, but it’s the only one that fits.”

Ben is such an important character in this series, and he deserved his own POV book. Blurred doesn’t regurgitate the other books via his POV…but provides the insight into his decisions that affected every character in this series.

I was lucky to receive and read Frayed (Connections #4). I am not going to spoil anything here, but I will say to Connections fans…that you want to read Blurred. Frayed picks up where Blurred left off. Once again Kim is going to take you on an emotional road trip and you will get to see how everyone is this series is Connected…Get ready for Kim Karr blow you away with this one.

“With each step I took I couldn’t help but notice that her eyes were locked on mine…green to blue. In them I saw a reflection from so long ago, of a memory I’ve forgotten.”

The Story I’ve longed for…

The lying, cheating bastard that is Ben Covington – the man most have come to resent in the Connection Series, tells his story. Alas, an insight into the dysfunctional mind of a character that both frazzled my emotions and caused great angst. Why was I anticipating his story? Because deep down, I believed there was hope for him – that there was more to his persona. I wanted to believe that Karr’s giftedness could change how I felt about the man who claimed to love Dahlia, yet destroyed all love’s beauty by surrendering to lustful temptations, lies and deceits. And as suspected, placing my trust in this author’s hands had me walking away pleased.

Now, it wasn’t easy for me to come to terms with Ben’s character. After reading “Torn” I wanted to gut him like a fish and fillet his balls. But something nagged at me – A teeny-tiny part of my heart wanted to reach out to him. I can’t imagine why since I found his actions truly deplorable. Nevertheless, I took the plunge, put my apprehension aside and dove head first into Ben’s world.

And what I discovered surprised me.

He forced me to understand his pain, his turmoil.

I was sorrowful for how he single handedly destroyed all the good in his life. Convinced that he loved Dahlia, but somehow lost his way and regrets the pain he had caused. That things happen for a reason and his temptation may be his salvation. His losses pulled on my heartstrings. In “Blurred”, we see all the fractured pieces of his drunken life; His struggle to crawl up from rock bottom; His quest for closure and redemption; His willingness to turn his life around to be a better man; To earn the affections from his seductress, Bell. It was admirable.

I learned that I don’t have to love a character to enjoy their story, but simply appreciate their strife and path to betterment. I did not walk into this story adoring Ben. However, I connected with his blurred and broken soul and now wholeheartedly believe that he is worthy of a second chance. Kim Karr has done the impossible. The “bad guy” she created morphed into a character that deserves a chance to achieve a “happily ever after” in my opinion. This was no small feat; Ben still behaved like an ass throughout most of this story. He needs to work hard to win me (and Bell) over in “Frayed”. Nonetheless, all the struggles I experienced reading his tale were well worth it.

I realize “Blurred” will be difficult for some readers. My advice, if you are a fan of the series, place trust in Karr’s vision and the path she will set forth for her characters. The journey will begin with a blur, but will end with clarity into the heart and soul of Ben. For me, the experience was gratifying. Another great read from the imagination of Kim Karr. Looking forward to the next installment…the story of Bell and Ben in “Frayed”.

“Life presents choices at every curve and it’s the choices we make that pave the way for our future.”

I would start this review by saying I am not a fan of Ben Covington. I don’t necessarily hate him but he’s also not on my favorite persons list. But because I enjoyed the first 4 books in the series, I am more than willing to give Ben a chance. I’m glad I did.

I am always open for authors redeeming their not-so-likeable characters, I’m curious and I’d like to read for myself if the character was redeemable or not. Reading Ben’s story, or a glimpse of it, from Connected was intriguing enough. Now, on Blurred, Kim Karr gave us a more in depth look at who Ben Covington was when he was with Dahlia and is now that he’s back from being “dead”. I think it’s safe to say that this is not a love story. This is a life story. This is Ben’s life story.

We were finally taken to his way of thinking and all the emotions that he’s been dealing with before and after that decision he’s made years ago that changed everything. He’s still not my favorite, I think I need to read more Ben and see him actually rise to the struggle he has with his life but I appreciate being in his thoughts and I now understand him a bit more than I did at the start of the series. It was not easy for me reading his story, I felt the struggle and pain that he was going through. It was obvious how lost he was and that feeling led him to several questionable decisions and actions. I actually felt sad for him. Again, this was not an easy read for me. If you’re asking “why are you giving it a 5 if it wasn’t easy for you?”, I’ll say, “because even though it was difficult, it made me open up my feelings for Ben and his situation and Kim Karr got my attention”.

You will see a broken, confused man searching for his purpose and a new meaning to life. I liked how the Kim did not soften Ben’s edges in this book. She gave us a raw version of him, something that we would be looking forward to for the next book on his happily ever after. Would he have it? How much more struggle would he face to finally reach that finish line for him? So even though Ben is not on top of my love list, I want and am still looking forward to his journey especially since Blurred ended towards that path. Blurred is like an introduction to Frayed which is the next book and will be available on September. Remember earlier when I mentioned Blurred is not exactly a love story? Yes, that’s why. This is a background on Ben’s life, I think this is for us readers to understand Ben before diving into his and Belle’s story. If this is the purpose, then it worked for me.

Stars: 5 stars!
Recommended to: Genuinely curious and open-minded about Ben Covington’s character.
POV: First person. Male POV.
Series: Yes.
Cliffhanger: Not exactly.
Extra Comment:: I understand a lot of readers do not like Ben to the point of hating him. If you consider giving Blurred a whirl, try to look at the bigger picture and step back for a while so Ben can stand a chance to redeem himself or for you to at least enjoy yourself a bit. But if not, it’s okay. We can’t all enjoy the same book. :)
