Product Description

A Thriller Award winner, Best Paperback Original Novel.

For three years, Detective Jude Fontaine was kept from the outside world. Held in an underground cell, her only contact was with her sadistic captor, and reading his face was her entire existence. Learning his every line, every movement, and every flicker of thought is what kept her alive.

After her experience with isolation and torture, she is left with a fierce desire for justice—and a heightened ability to interpret the body language of both the living and the dead. Despite colleagues’ doubts about her mental state, she resumes her role at Homicide. Her new partner, Detective Uriah Ashby, doesn’t trust her sanity, and he has a story of his own he’d rather keep hidden. But a killer is on the loose, murdering young women, so the detectives have no choice: they must work together to catch the madman before he strikes again. And no one knows madmen like Jude Fontaine.

This is a story that grabs your attention from the get-go.
Jude Fontaine used to be an easy going homicide detective. That was before she was abducted & endured 3 years of abuse at the hands of a madman. So when she finally escapes & gets her old job back it should be all good, right? Well....

This fast paced police procedural is not for the squeamish. We follow Jude & her partner Uriah Ashby as they investigate the fallout from depravity run amok. It's a tough job on a good day & neither has had one of those in a long time. As a result of her ordeal, Jude has become detached & lacking in social skills. Uriah is her emotional opposite. He's still reeling from the loss of his wife & struggles to keep a lid on everything he feels. As the story progresses both will uncover family secrets that force them to question just how well they knew those closest to them.

Though events that occur are horrific in nature, the author doesn't dwell on gruesome details & allows the readers' imagination to fill in the blanks. Some of the bad guys will trigger your spidey senses immediately while others may take you by surprise when all is revealed. It makes for a satisfying police procedural but it's the relationship between the MC's that guarantees you become invested in the story. If this is the start of a new series I'd definitely like to catch up with these 2 in the next book.

Wow, this book really impressed me. It certainly has one of the best openings to a story that I’ve ever read. You can tell straight away that the Author has a talent for writing. I can also see why so many readers have given Anne Fraser 5 stars for her other books, thoroughly deserving. It’s hard to imagine being locked away for 3 years in the dark, and what it would do to your mind. Detective Jude Fontaine somehow managed it, and quite quickly got on with her life and back to work. Her enhanced senses have given her a very unique set of skills as a detective, and certainly sets her apart from her work colleagues. They don’t know how damaged Jude is after three years and whether she is up to the job anymore. A stand out for me is that every character is quite interesting, and I enjoyed the detail the Author has put into each one of them. There aren’t enough words to describe how much I enjoyed this book. This is a must read.

grabs your attention right away. the protagonist is a broken hero, surviving in spite of going through hell. you empathize and root for her and become engaged in her struggle. i loved this book, would not recommend it for young readers. even though the violence is not overly descriptive, ( much is left to your imagination), it's insights into human condition of evil is not something i would want to subject a child to.

I almost did not start reading this book because the story was so gruesome. But this is a story about winning not losing. It's about surviving and proving you were right and it's about good triumphing over evil. Bad things happen, but they are dealt with matter of factly. The good guys are likable and believable. You feel good at the end. Like others, I hope this becomes a series.

Suspension of disbelief interrupted rudely by the terse and over the top violence at tbe end. It made me question the entire premise which i had believed until this point.
