"Coffee quality has been improving by leaps and bounds in the past decade. A new generation of coffee roasters from coast to coast is coming of age; they are incentivizing farmers and putting them front and center, not hiding them in homogenized blends. I am thrilled to be one of them! We are creating new standards for freshness all the way from the farm to the home. And we are demanding better brewing to prove how great our coffees are--in cafes and in homes. The Bonavita answers that call for home brewing.
At last! A simple, reasonably priced, smartly compact drip coffee brewer which belies its power and accuracy. The water temperature is hot enough to extract all the nuances found in fine coffees. The showerhead provides enough turbulence and coverage so the coffee grounds are saturated. The Bonavita comes with glass carafe or a stainless, very conveniently designed thermos. Time for simplicity with pinpoint sureness. Enjoy!"

True, these coffee makers are not for everyone. Some people like their coffee burnt, having simmered for an hour on a heating plate, in a glass carafe. I don't say this facetiously or in jest. My husband thought he liked his coffee as I just described, or at least remarked that it was good enough for him, until he discovered how coffee is meant to taste. We also invested in a proper burr grinder, the Baratza Virtuoso which is actually a bit more expensive than the Bonavita, but burr ground coffee DOES make a big difference, as does coffee bean freshness.
The Bonavita is well made; no quality problems and simple to use. There are no bells and whistles like clocks and timers. This machine is about serious coffee making, not about telling the time or waking you up. There are clocks on the market that specialize in those things. The Bonavita has a simple on/off switch. If you are in a hurry or clumsy, you could spill the coffee as you pour it from the carafe spout. Old habits do get trained out. The carafe is thermal, deemed the best type to prevent overheating and scorching freshly ground coffee beans. It is only 8 cups large but it makes fresh coffee faster than our previous Braun cone filter coffee maker.Read more ›
This thing is extremely fragile. I am not sure if mine was an anomaly, but after using it for about a month, when I went to wash it in warm water, the glass inside the carafe just exploded. Bonavita were very quick to send me a replacement, so I assume this is a common issue. Their customer service was fantastic, shipping me a replacement within the week, but I am now very worried about washing the new carafe. They give you a foam brush to clean it with so that you don't score the glass with a brush, but I am still very concerned about it shattering due to some change in temperature.
Love: the wide-mouth carafe is easy to clean
Love: as expected the coffee is excellent - perfect temp - good and hot and matches spec.
Didn't love: the filter holder rests on top of the carafe, instead of being attached to the top of the machine, which was different from every other coffee machine I've owned.
- I was worried that might easily topple over - but on testing it won't/doesn't. The base of the coffee machine holds the carafe securily, and the filter cup is designed well/stays solid on the carafe.
- I realized later that this allows a solid lid on the carafe once the coffee is made and the filter cup removed - this means the coffee stays hotter longer than my old philips model (with the little hole in the top that has a plastic disc that is held closed by rising steam within the carafe).
- I also realized that this prevents an issue I'd sometimes faced, when the coffee would spill all over my counter if the little disk on the carafe lid would somehow inexplicably hold closed and coffee couldn't flow into the carafe. I'm not the only person I've seen in reviews who's hit that issue with typical philips/thermal carafes. Though the Bonavita system seemed strange at 1st and a tiny bit less convenient (after brewing, you have to remove the cup and then add the lid), I don't miss the extreme mess the old machine caused.
- Also - I was concerned that the cup/filter would drip on my counter when I removed it to add the carafe lid (counter is wood in this area so has to be protected); it's been designed well and doesn't leak/drip.Read more ›
This unit should last longer than that. I will go to manufacturer to repair but may not be worth the cost.
My only knock against the Bonavita is that it does not make a lot of coffee. I wish that it would make one or two cups more each brew, but it is not enough of an issue for me not to give this product a full five stars. I live in an area with very hard water and even though I use water I filtered myself, there is still some lime and scale build up but there are a lot of descaling products available and I use one of those every few months.
I freshly grind and roast 64 grams of beans and fill up the reservoir to the highest line and in 6 minutes I am drinking absolutely perfect coffee.
