HASH(0xa51713cc) out of 5 stars Magical for the young and young at heart Sept. 29 2009
By L. J. Demmler - Published on
Format: Hardcover
What a wonderfully magical book. From the moment we opened the book we were transported into the world of fairies. The illustrations and story are absolutely captivating and enchant you with the possibilities. Reading as a bedtime book, my five year old daughter was eagerly looking for fairies on her pillows that may be reading along with her! She loves to read this over and over, always finding something in the illustrations or story that she hadn't caught before - almost as if the fairies are re-writing for her delight between each read! A spectacular book that is marvelous for children of all ages.

HASH(0xa5171420) out of 5 stars Welcome to the magical world of fairies! July 6 2009

Welcome to the magical world of fairies! Patricia Saxton takes us to this enchanted world in her delightful new "Book of Fairies". Your inner child will be tickled pink with fun fairy facts, secrets and celebrations. Fairies is written with the same humor used so effecitively in the author's "Book of Mermaids". The beautiful quotes, fairyland insight and creative use of mixed media illustration make this book especially enjoyable.
I highly recommend this reading adventure! The playfulness, wisdom and book quality make purchasing a no brainer! You certainly will be proud to have "Book of Fairies" in your book collection...along with Patricia Saxton's "Book of Mermaids", if you don't already. (The back cover mentions that the author is woking on a third book! I can't wait to find out what other mystical being she will introduce us to! )

HASH(0xa51716fc) out of 5 stars Just Perfect! May 28 2013

I am the Grandmother of 2 beautiful little girls--2 and 4 years old. Last Summer I created a Fairy Garden and the my oldest Granddaughter loved it! At the end of the season I packed up all the little Fairy things and put them away for the Winter. This year I put everything out for Memorial Day weekend and added another Fairy House-I had this book delivered the week leading up to Memorial Day. My Granddaughter brought chocolate chips and a gold grocery store token and placed them at the Fairy Homes. She read in this book that Fairies like Chocolate and Shiny objects--she loved this book-it was perfect. If you are a Grandparent, make a Fairy House and buy this book-and you'll be making memories for a lifetime.

HASH(0xa51715f4) out of 5 stars mixed media art collage - beautiful backdrop for a children's fantasy(?) sociology book on fairies Jan. 15 2013
By Debbie Levine - Published on
Format: Hardcover
My creative pull these days has been in the area of mixed-media collage...... and when I'm in the creative zone, all I do is think about combinations of *artsy things* watercolor, acrylic, ink, photographs, drawings..... and everything I am drawn to in the visual sense follows suit. So it was only a matter of time before I went back and looked, again, at my copy of "Fairies" by Patricia Saxton. Yes, it is a children's book - and yes, it is playfully and articulately written like a serious reference book (it reads to me like The Sociology of Fairies 101) ...... and YES it keeps my attention as I read it to my daughter who examines the fairy wings with undistracted scrutiny since she is drawn to everything that has wings...... but really, I love this book because it is a compilation of ART that just FASCINATES me every time I look at it. Pat Saxton is an artist. A real artist. (And apparently a gifted writer, but I'm talking about her ART right now.) She takes her illustrations (which are AMAZING) and her watercolors and her oil paintings and her graphic arts talent for knowing exactly which font to use in order to evoke the emotion that matches the content..... and she combines all this art magically (like a fairy!) and it just makes me smile as I marvel over the choreography of visuals she uses to enhance her fairy story. Truly, as far as art in children's books go....this book rocks it. As a sociologist at heart my favorite part of the book is "Fairy Communities" ....... she writes "Fairyland is made of four communities of magical beings whose powers come from the elements of earth, air, water and fire. Established long, long ago, these communities depend on each other and work together in a spirit of friendly cooperation. But that's not to say there isn't the occasional disagreement! To help keep order, a Fairy King and a Fairy Queen reign over each community. The king and queen act s a team to set the rules, keep up with planetary changes, and when needed, settle clashes between elements........" Just brilliant. Clearly I recommend this book.

HASH(0xa5171c30) out of 5 stars Splendid! Sept. 30 2013

Over the years, we have developed a wonderful children's library in our home that our children have always adored. I have to say, that now that I have found Patricia Saxton's books, I am beyond thrilled! A Book of Fairies is simply gorgeous! Artistically, a true gem that carries us into a magical and most splendid world of marvelous creatures that we love and adore! Saxton is a wonderful writer and remarkable artist. My now grown children love this fairy book, and in two months I am giving it as a gift to my soon to be grand-daughter - I am beyond thrilled to help my son and daughter-in-law begin their beautiful world of books for their children - with the very first book being A Book of Fairies. Positively splendid!
