Product Description

More than ever, people are talking about leadership. But much of today's discourse is advancing the same old misconceptions.

In The Book on Leadership, best-selling author, pastor, and teacher John MacArthur sets the record straight: Leadership does not come from a job title. It isn't a matter of personality or charisma. And it isn't the same thing as iron-fisted authority. True leadership?the kind that refuses to bend to a shifting, fickle world?comes from a much deeper source.

Based on the writings of one of the most effective spiritual leaders of all time?the apostle Paul?MacArthur presents the "26 Characteristics of a True Leader." Whether you are a business leader, civic leader, church leader, parent, teacher, or student, the life of Paul will empower you to unleash your own capacity for leadership.

First, the outside cover of this book is extremely impressive. It LOOKS like leather. I had to touch it to make sure that it was not. The edging at the top and bottom of each page is normal, smooth and even. However, the outside edge of each page has an old journal look, uneven or torn. The combined effect draws the eye to the book.
Second, the contents include:
Earning Trust
Taking the Initiative
Taking Courage
Taking Charge
A Leader's Devotion to His People
Paul Defends His Sincerity
"Who Is Sufficient for These Things?"
A Leader Made of Clay
The Leader's Warfare
How Not to Be Disqualified
Who Is Fit to Lead?
The Measure of a Leader's Success

Notes
***** Third, I found the information very helpful. The author uses the apostle Paul to show how leaders today work, as well as, how they should work. Sections of the Bible are quoted throughout the entire book which makes it a pretty decent study guide as well. Very interesting reading! *****

John MacArthur, one of the most prominent evangelical leaders today, does an outstanding job showing the character and characteristics that make a great leader as embodied in the Apostle Paul.

In Part 1 we see that Paul took charge, and people looked to him, even though he had no formal position of leadership. Why? Because he had earned their trust and took the initiative.

Part 2 deals with Paul's leadership in Corinth, which, as we all know, was not a pleasant situation. But he endured because he loved God and he loved the people whom he served as their leader.

Finally, in parts 3 and 4, MacArthur brings everything that we can learn from Paul's example home by applying it to our lives and positions.

'The Book on Leadership' is a great starting place for solid, Biblical, teaching on what a leader is. For further study I would recommend SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP (HB): Moving People on to God's Agenda.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Lessons on Leadership! Aug. 12 2016
By Matthew Layman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I had never considered Paul as a case study in leadership, but this book brought Paul's ministry to life and highlighted many significant leadership truths that he exemplified. Many of these leadership principles are ones I have heard before in secular leadership books and from leadership courses in the military, but viewing these same principles through a spiritual lens gave them new meaning and significance. I read this book out of a desire to become a better spiritual leader for my family, and God has definitely used the lessons from this book to grow me in that area if my life. My one criticism of this book is that the author has over 20 leadership principles, which is a lot to keep track of. Some of the principles were similar enough that they could have been condensed in order to shorten the list. Coming from a military background I've found that the most effective models (whether they're leadership, decision making, our problem solving models) are short and easy to remember. That's not to say they're simple, each step or principle can have additional layers of depth, but keeping the top level model short makes it easier to remember and apply from memory. Otherwise this was an excellent book that I've already recommended to several friends.
5.0 out of 5 stars Self assessment of your Spiritual Leadership, guide March 3 2017

The author has you assesses your true Spiritual walk with Jesus by comparing ALL your actions in accordance to The Word of God!

I purchased this book because, I, have 30+ years of military experience and consider myself a very good leader of men, however, my awakening of a true Spiritual leader was very eye opening! I must admit that ALL my leadership gifts received by my Heavenly Father was not me at all, but He through me!

ALL church leaders should read, acknowledge, understand, and pray for Gods revelation of the wisdom provided in this book with The Word of God!

I assure you that God will provide a clear understanding of the message that the author was greatly blessed to provide for all of us.

God Bless

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful and Practical Guide on Godly Leadership May 8 2007
By Amy Brown - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
MacArthur takes the reader through significant events in the life of Paul, beginning in Acts 27 and continuing into II Corinthians, providing insight into Paul's leadership ability and personal character as it is demonstrated in his dealings with pagan sailors, false teachers, and immature Christians.

He also takes a short detour towards the beginning of the book to look into the life of Nehemiah in order to glean some wisdom from Nehemiah's effort to rebuild the wall. The end result is an extremely practical, Biblically saturated guide into true leadership. From the life of Paul and Nehemiah, MacArthur derives 26 characteristics of a true leader. Especially helpful is an appendix on page 209 which provides the list of the 26 characteristics in the order in which they appear in the book.

Another very helpful portion of this book is where MacArthur elaborates on the principle that a "Leader is disciplined" (147). On pages 152 through 157, MacArthur gives eight specific, practical ways in which a person can discipline himself or herself: Get organized; use time wisely; findways to be edified rather than merely entertained; pay attention to small things; accept extra resposibility; once you start something, finish it; keep your commitments and tell yourself no from time to time.

Overall, the book is exrememly helpful and practical and will be very encouraging for those who desire to be true leaders. I highly recommend it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Its ok. Dec 22 2013

This isn't a premier leadership book per se, but as always, Pastor Macarthur does a top notch job in expositing the Bible. He pointed out areas of scripture in terms of Apostle Paul's leadership that I had overlooked. If you can get this book for cheap, it isn't a bad read and you will learn.
5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for young and old Christians Aug. 18 2013

I'm fourteen and I got this book a while ago when I was searching for a book on good christian leadership and found this one. So I bought, it got here in five or four days and in good condition. When it got here layer it down on my bookshelf and left it there for about a month. One night I decided to start reading got to pages into it and saw to sentences that stuck me so I highlighted them and I usually never highlitght( I don't know why). Then, I found out that in the appendix it lists charactoristics of a leader read threw them and started reading down the list and when I finished all 26 of charactoristics. I felt convicted, you could say because I started crying and usually ever cry reading book (this is my first book I have ever read where I cried). I love this book. Buy it. Treasure it. Learn it. LIFE CHANGING.
