OK, I have to admit it, I'm fairly jaded when it comes to kids books. There's so many out there, that it's easy to find clunkers. So when a book for young children came out that had no pictures, I thought it might have clunker written all over it (literally). I generally don't like being wrong, but this is an example of when I'm happy that I'm not right. Because this book is a gem. I think it just might become a classic.

What is it? It's a book aimed at younger audiences (I would say 10 and younger, with 3-6 being the likely sweet spot), and as advertised, there are no pictures. There isn't even a story with a plot. What this book does, and does beautifully, is get the adult who reads it to say silly things. The "rule" of the book is that you have to read what's written. Every word, even if it's not a real word. So you have to admit you're a monkey. Or that your best friend has a really silly name. Or that you are just reading some very funny-sounding non-words.

The concept works. You can have a book for young children that has no pictures. And they can, and almost certainly will, enjoy you reading it to them. You have to get into the reading to really make it work, but the reward of making a child laugh and smile is about the best motivation you can get. Which means I have no problem giving this book five stars.

This is the best children's book that I have read in a long, long time. I am a retired teacher with over 30 years of classroom experience, and a mother, so I have read a lot of kids' books!! I bought this for my grandchildren for Christmas and can't wait to read it to them.

I love giving this book to people. It is a great way to engage your child in a flurry of giggles and not take yourself too seriously. Also since it is by someone who most of my parent friends know and enjoy, they feel good about it.

Though it seems dubious that television writer and comedian B.J. Novak would pen a children's book, he certainly delivers a unique find with "The Book With No Pictures." While the book may not contain pictures, it sure inspires conversation and laughter with its artful typography that visually guides oral readings.

The text implies, no - DEMANDS, a shared reading experience, in which an adult or older child must read the words on the page aloud, no matter how "completely ridiculous" they sound. Nonsense words, silly syllables for singing and even the requisite potty talk for good measure all coalesce in hilarious read-aloud fare. Although the closing pages beg the implied child reader to “please...choose a book with pictures” next time, most kids will become hooked on this picture-free adventure.

Ready? Hold on because I am highlighting a book today that is so out-of-the-box that no words can even explain it. This book only uses words to convey the best reading experience to-date that I have come across in the world of children's books in a long, long time, and true to its title, it contains no pictures. Yep, you heard me right...a picture book with NO pictures. Who thought it could be done?.... and in excellence.

B. J. Novak, a television writer and comedian, takes the picture book to a whole new level and makes it work beautifully. How can that be you ask? Well the book is packed full of words....using creative style fonts, colours and sizes and the reader of the book must pledge from the very beginning to read every single word printed in that book, no matter what. The results of an obedient reader will bring hysteria, entertainment and engagement to the one being read to. The nonsensical words, fun phrases, silly syllables and potty talk will bring giggles and delight to listeners of all ages.

This unique and unconventional book of storytelling is truly storytelling at its best. Be sure to pick up a copy and start practising your ridiculous voices, contorted facial expressions and over dramatic moves as you open the cover to share this gem again and again. Trust me kids will not get enough of this book at one sitting....are you ready?

I have only had this book for 2 days and have already read it about 10 times. I run a dayhome and usually my crew never sits still long enough to listen to a whole book. All day the kids (Age 2-5) have been begging to listen to "The funniest book in the whole world" and when I don't read it's they pretend to read it themselves. My kids are notoriously bad for refusing to clean up and I said "If you clean the living room I will read The Book With No Pictures" they ran and cleaned up faster and better than I have ever seen before. Money well spent on this book!
