I also appreciate that the book has its serious moments, but one thing I do have knock on a little is that serious matters are often always deflected with humor which something the author concedes he does frequently. I can appreciate that, but there were several moments where I thought the humor wasn't simply needed to make the point stand, and perhaps, the point may have stood more elegantly without the joke. Overall, I think Ellis offers some valuable insights through his own (often hilariously told) experiences that make this book a real treat despite maybe what is a little too much humor in the serious place.
There is a little retreading of material from his blog, but I think it helps unify the book in a lot of ways that makes the book as a whole make sense(which works well for people who haven't read the blog at all). This has been one of the highlights of my summer reading thus far, and it is definitely a book I could see myself picking up from time to time to revisit one of the funnier portions. I will definitely pick up a second one if it comes out.
I was not disappointed! In fact, There were a few spots where I actually started laughing on the bus, and my brother and I really enjoyed quoting it for a few weeks to come (My favorite story being the story of the GURD). The illustrations are hilarious as you'd expect and just add a lot to the story, but thankfully the book can also stand on its own even without the illustrations.
So why 4 stars? Well, I couldn't help but feel that it was missing something. Maybe it as too short, maybe the inculsion of before-seen strips from the website...
Overall it was a great read. I only wish it felt more... whole.
