Boondock Saints ~ Boondock Saints
Charismatic young stars Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus play two Irish brothers, Connor and Murphy, who believe themselves ordained by God to rid the world of evil men. Their first killing is in self-defense; but after that, they start killing with devotion, gunning down a summit of the Russian mafia. Willem Dafoe plays a gay FBI agent (he listens to opera while examining crime scenes) who knows what the boys are doing but feels that their vigilante tactics are necessary. There's not much plot to The Boondock Saints--it's mostly a series of violent scenes in which the boys are partially ingenious and partially lucky. The movie seems to want to provoke debate about vigilantism, but the scenario is too implausible to stir any real controversy. The peculiar mix of earnestness and machismo will not appeal to everyone, but it's certainly unique and may acquire a cult following. --Bret Fetzer --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The acting is great on all parts, but Willem Dafoe is clearly the star of this movie. If you thought you were a fan before, you will fall head-over-heels in love with Dafoe in this role. His portrail of a gay, and very intellegent cop is both believeable and entertaining at the same time.
In terms of style, Boondock Saints is surprisingly well filmed, and concieved. For instance, they never show the crimes as the saints commit them, they're showed as Dafoe unravels them from the crime scene. Towards the end, in a moment of conceptual genuis, Dafoe apperes next to the saints, them actually shooting, Dafoe reinacting the scene for co workers.
Boondock Saints is sure to surprise audiences at how widly well recieved it is sure to be. After a few more viewings, i could see this becoming one of my favorite movies.
I really liked this movie because of the good story and the amusing characters/ dialogue not to mention the unbelievable action sequences. It truly does use all of the stereotypes of the traditional action movie to its advantage by making fun of them yet at the same time performing them. The two-narrator style works very well as well and I think that the whole thing is a blast because of it. The characters rule! The action is awesome! And I spent 25 bucks for the DVD willingly. Years later and I do not regret my purchase in the least. I would definitely say that this is a must own movie.
The paper thin plot revolves around the doings of two Irish brothers who set out to clean up their town by killing people they see as evil. In this case, the victims are mainly members of the Russian Mafia. Trying to catch them is an annoyingly stereotypical gay detective (Willem Dafoe, who deserves better roles than this). His constant failure in catching the two "saints" starts to infuriate him, but it also makes him wonder whether or not what the two are doing is right.
"Boondock Saints" covers painfully familiar territory in it's tale of vigilante justice. Worst of all, towards the end of the film the director makes a left turn towards the moral question of whether killing is justified, even if the victims are evil. This theme has been explored before, and no new insights are given. There are more thought provoking vigilante moral questions in a "Punisher" comic for Christ's sake.
The film does have a good opening, and the performances (led by Dafoe) are charismatic enough. Go ahead and rent it if you're bored. Just don't expect anything new or intelligent.
