I love this book! Any child or adult can read this as there are no words! This allows for an imaginative read as well as the book being potentially different every time. For any child that loves airplanes and overcoming odds, this is a fantastic "read"!

HASH(0xa7fdc864) out of 5 stars Sweet story to savor July 30 2013
By Jonathan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Recently, while my granddaughter was playing with the toddler puzzles in the public library, Mark Pett's "The Boy and the Airplane" called to me from the "new books" shelf. Lucky me! (I quickly bought a copy to keep and several for gifts.)

When my daughters were young, I loved going through our pictures-only narrative books with them. The likes of Peter Spier's "Noah's Ark" and "Rain," John Goodall's "Paddy's Evening Out" and Mitsumasa Anno's "Anno's Journey" prompted my girls' imaginations -- and sparked mine -- in wonderful ways. I relived those days as I read "The Boy and the Airplane."

Mark Pett's uncluttered, gentle, pencil-and-watercolor illustrations -- on warm, earth-hued backgrounds -- enhance the sweet, soft tone of a story that spans a range of feelings, including joy, dismay, determination and patience. As the son of a man who treasured well-made large metal toys -- plane, truck, tractor -- I empathized with the boy in the story, who loses and finally recovers a cherished gift. At the very end, I found myself chuckling with pleasure...with a tear welling in my eye.

Two minor quibbles: one word is used (three times) unnecessarily as a sound effect and some readers are "tricked" into stopping before the end. For the full, rich reward of "The Boy and the Airplane," savor it all the way through.

HASH(0xa78498e8) out of 5 stars My Grandsons Loved This Book Sept. 19 2013
By Carol H. Gordon - Published on Amazon.com

This is the first "picture only" book I have bought for my grandsons, so I was unsure how they would react to it. I have to say that I think they enjoyed it very much. This book leaves a lot to a child's imagination and that is what makes it so valuable. It teaches a child the power of thinking and reasoning, and the outcome of the story is left to the individual child who is reading the book. My grandsons are 3 and 6; the book was more appropriate for the older one. I would say it would probably be enjoyed from ages 5 to 7, but of course that depends on the individual child's ability to reason. Overall, I highly recommend it!
