Review

"Dr. Perlmutter's book is among those rare and exciting exceptions: information so empowering, so enlightening, and presented so clearly and concisely that the reader emerges far better off for the reading experience. Put this book on your short list of must-reads for health and nutrition."―William Davis, MD, author of Wheat Belly

"The research in Brain Maker was a revelation to me. And it will be to you as well. And, most importantly, you don't have to wait for this information to become mainstream. You can ensure your brain health-and that of your family-by following the practical program outlined here."―Christiane Northrup, MD, author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom and Goddesses Never Age

"The single most important medical innovation in the 21st century is making the link between the gut and the little bugs that live there and nearly every chronic disease - from autism to depression, from asthma to autoimmune disease, from diabetes to dementia. Brain Maker is a game changer. For the first time, this brilliant scientist doctor connects the dots and teaches us why we need to tend our inner garden (our microbiome) and provides a radical but simple plan to reset, reboot, and renew your microbiome. This book shouldn't be called Brain Maker, it should be called Health Maker."―Mark Hyman, MD, author of The Blood Sugar Solution

"Thanks in large part to dramatic and ongoing increases in understanding the brain-gut-microbiome connection, there is new hope for the treatment of many neurological conditions, from autism to Alzheimer's to multiple sclerosis. David Perlmutter is a leader in this burgeoning field, and his new book, Brain Maker, is a landmark contribution."―Dale E. Bredesen, MD, professor and director of Alzheimer's Disease Research, UCLA

"In this revolutionary new book, the nation's leading integrative neurologist, David Perlmutter, gives you a powerful program to heal your gut and optimize your brain. I will recommend it to all of my patients and friends."―Daniel G. Amen, MD, founder of Amen Clinics and author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life and Healing ADD

"Bravo! Dr. Permutter's latest paradigm-shifting book shows us how to manage our health, and especially our brains, through the new frontier of science, the microbiome. By connecting the dots from our gut to our brain, he explains how we can avoid disease, age well, handle stress, and manage our moods. With revolutionary ideas and practical advice, he gives us a fighting chance against brain decline. I love this book!"―John Ratey, MD, author of Spark and coauthor of Go Wild, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School

"Dr. Perlmutter engagingly explains the hope-generating power of the new gut microbiome-brain science, motivating you to regenerate your brain health with his powerful and practical program."―Martha Herbert, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Neurology, Harvard Medical School

Don't think this is just another book on friendly flora. It's not. And the name might lead you to think it's primarily about brain health. Dr. Perlmutter is a neurologist, so he certainly delves into the effect of gut microbes on the brain. But he covers so much more, including the connection to obesity, appetite, inflammation, depression and anxiety.

The book has expected advice, like drop the fructose, eat low carb, eat plenty of high quality fats.

And it has some unexpected treats like "ENJOY WINE, TEA, COFFEE AND CHOCOLATE". Gotta like that!

I was impressed with the recipes, like home made corned beef. So yummy.

I was only disappointed with one thing. When it came to recommending probiotic supplements, he gives guidelines, but no brand recommendations. I was taking 5 brands of supplements twice per day, but eventually realized it wasn't necessary. I settled on just UP4 from UAS Life Sciences. I feel that my gut flora is healthy now, for the first time in many years.

This is the best book on gut microbes that I have read.

Changed my eating habit and life style. I don't know why Dr. Perlmutter is criticized...he doesn't try to sell anything in this book. He does have some recipes for probiotic foods that were a little too complicated to follow.
For ourselves, we started making our own kefir (super easy) and pickles (found recipe online for brined pickles). I'm not carb free but almost gluten free. It is easier to do then when I first thought about it. Being gluten free or carb free means you can't just reach into a drawer and pull out bread or buns though....you have to actually think about the food you eat. This is a good thing.
I think this is a modern day Must Read.

Changed my life. I made the book's recommended and scientific-heavy lifestyle change after reading the book several months ago. It's completely transformed my mood, anxiety, gut problems, and even relationship. I cook home meals more often and am therefore saving money. I am also spending more time with my family, sharing and making meals together and watching each other's energy levels and moods rise. Completely life changing in every way.

Another excellent read from this author! Be prepared for a fishy eyed look from your doctor (yeah, I know, not all) if you dare broach the subject but, in my never to humble opinion, if the preponderance of our doctors were up to speed we wouldn't be a society sliding into morbid obesity and a host of neurological disorders.

this book is amazing, i cannot believe the information that I got out of this book. I can't wait to change my grandson's diet , he has ADHD, and is on ritalin, which I hate to see, I think the research that Dr. Perlmutter has done is going to be the breakthrough that medicine has been missing on a healthy body and mind.

This book is all about, the guardianship of the bacteria contained in our digestive track. The evolution of these microbes, has taken millions of years to develop. Dr. Perlmutter points to evidence suggesting, many new additions to our diet, have disrupted the beneficial aspects of our stomach bacteria. He believes it is possible problems like; Alzheimer`s disease, cancer, depression, and even autism, have been caused by imbalances in our digestive biome. Recently created foods like; high fructose corn syrup, over use of antibiodics, pesticide residues in our food supply, are just a few examples of negative new additions to our diet.

Dr. Perlmutter points out, that none of these disease links to gut bateria have been proven. Yet the reader will find themselves drawn to Dr. Perlmutter over all theme. The proper management of our digestive track, will help with one`s general health condition. He lays out all sorts of dietary suggestions. Certain foods contain probiotics and there are several probiotic supplements listed in the book.

There were some repetition issues in the book. Some areas of interest were left out. For instance, does taking a vitamin supplement affect the biodiversity contained in our digestive system? On the same note, do probiotic supplements act differently then natural foods containing probiotics? These were just a few of the questions, the reader will be left wondering about.

In summary, this is an area of health management, that is not very well known to the general public. Dr. Perlmutter has opened the door, to further insights into this field of human health. It is a short book and a quick read. The reader will take away some rather interesting ideas, regarding our diet and health management.

Excellent book! I'm a physician & health/fitness enthusiast and it was detailed & scientific enough for me even though it is geared toward the general public! Loved it & highly recommend it.

It contains some useful information, but like all books of this kind, it is verbose and repetitive. The final dietary recommendations and recipes are not that different from a generic nutrition/diet book. One can probably summarize the book in two paragraphs.
