Talent and heart all around

Thanks to this puzzling title (released in English by Counterpath Press, Denver, Feb. 2013), I just discovered Arno Bertina, a French author with a lot of talent, intelligence of the heart and humility. Some could think they do not know enough about French history (WWII collaboration vs Resistance, colonized African countries, social and class issues in provincial France) to really appreciate the subtlety of the light brush strokes used to paint a portrait of a half known great-uncle, and reconstruct the puzzle of the unknown half. Yet, this translation from the French by Anne-Laure Tissut and Laird Hunt brings to English speakers the exact flavor of the time, the emotional tension within this particular family, the universality of what it is to be a human being who refuses to give in to family and social expectations/pressure, and leaves to remain a free individual, true to himself. Highly recommended 98-page gem packed with food for thought and emotion--and humor--in an unconventional, effective form.
