As Kelly prepares the worldwide release of her new album, she's riding another hit single and video, 'Breakaway,' which is quickly becoming one of the hottest songs at radio for the fall of 2004, as well as the setup track for this new record. With contributions from some of the biggest producers in music today (John Shanks, Max Martin, Clif Magness, Ben Moody), Kelly's new record will further broaden her base as a worldwide pop star. The publicity campaign surrounding the launch of this album, one of the most anticipated pop events of the year, will see Kelly everywhere leading into this holiday season.
Kelly Clarkson could have played her American Idol-propelled career much differently, languishing in the role of dippy ingénue or shunting her musical development by leaning too heavily on overnight stardom. Instead she dug in her heels and allowed good sense (or a good manager) to steer, and somewhere Simon Fuller and the rest of the TV gang ought to be smiling. Credit Breakaway, which couldn't be more aptly titled--the sophomore set represents a seismic split from the thin if pretty stuff debut Thankful set forth. Here we encounter Clarkson as superstar, with the humility that made her likable on the first disc tucked tightly under her arm. First single and leadoff track "Breakaway" topped the pop charts on arrival, and its rock-friendly thumps, dips, and rolls don't wear out their welcome; they blend, instead, into the firestorm of beats and guitars that is "Since U Been Gone," another shout-it-out rocker. Those songs set the tone for the rest of the disc in all its fury: The innocence is long gone, numbers including "Addicted" and "Hear Me" say collectively, and Clarkson's of a mind to kick it. The big, expressive voice ringed by the occasional high-pitch trill--the one that prompted millions to get behind her on Idol--doesn't dip entirely off the radar, though. On "Where Is Your Heart," and the stunning live closer "Beautiful Disaster," it's there in full force--a hint, maybe, that despite the wide, smart career step Breakaway represents, her fans come first. -Tammy La Gorce

Kelly carefully did her job while making this album, teaming up with some of the hottest songwriters in the business right now. (Avril Lavigne, Ben Moody, Chantal Kreviazuk, Raine Maida etc.), and in the end, you come out with a decent album. Many compare it to Avril's latest album, Under My Skin, which is a bit obvious because she teamed up with most of the same songwriters (including Avril herself).
There are a few filler tracks, like "Gone" "Walk Away" and "I Hate Myself for Losing You", but the rest of the album is amazing. Its properly titled "Breakaway" because she's breaking away from her crap that she released on her first album.
The reason why this album is so much better, is because Kelly took her time to get this album properly produced and written. I think they just rushed her first album, because they wanted to release something quickly from the "first winner of american idol".
all in all, don't let the fact that shes an American Idol winner trick u, this album is definitely awesome. I really like the bonus live track "Beautiful Disaster".
1.Breakaway: This is a cool little ditty; makes you want to take off in the car & head to the beach! Good pop tune!
2.Since U Been Gone: This song got alot of radio play here in Canada as well as the video for it. It showed her potential as a punk/rocker chick also even though it's a pop tune. She displayed she could be an American version of Canada's Avril Lavigne if she wanted to. I'm sure this track played in alot of high school dances & college dorms!
3.Behind These Hazel Eyes: This is Kelly pouring her heart out...letting us into her heart...showing the baggage that she holds onto. This is another great pop tune & was popular when it came out.
4.Because of U: I love this song. Such a touching heartfelt ballad which she is so gifted at conveying to the listener. My heart just breaks listening to this song...wishing that whatever transpired in her life that gave these lyrics their birth didn't have to have happened to her. But at the same time I'm sure writing this song was cathartic for her. Just outstanding vocally, lyrically, & conceptually.
5.Addicted: No one can tell the story of love lost, love's hurts and the repercussions of that like Kelly. This to me is one of Kelly's best songs. It has been on my favorite playlist since I got this CD and likely won't be going off of it in my lifetime. Cool overlapping vocals, and just insightful, self-reflective ability to understand one's emotions in the thick of it! 10+++++++++++++++
6.Where Is Your Heart: Another absolutely gorgeous ballad from Kelly. I love her soft vocals in this song...showing her range...with those breathy parts. The lyrics are just beautiful......and something many of us have said many times in one of those relationships that perhaps aren't healthy for us but it takes time to learn that......have to wait for the rose coloured glasses to be taken off!
7.I Hate Myself 4 Losing You: I love this track...such cool instrumentals in this....and she's so great at doing great rocky/pop vocals! Of course it's another love lost song...but so well written & performed...she kills the vocal on it!
8.Beautiful Disaster (Live): I loved this live version of this song. While I like the recorded version also I liked the feel of it done live. What a wicked vocal performance. The piano sounds so good in this song also.
These were my favorite tracks on this CD. After listening to this CD again to do this review I really recognize how good this CD was. Pick it up...you will be able to listen to many of these songs for decades; it's that well done!
