I do recommend this machine or even an upgrade to the fully automatic one (I think it's called Oracle). I will say with this machine you might need to be patient with yourself and the machine while you work out what grind level is right for the coffee you've chosen and how much to tamp it down. I was starting to think I'd never get it right--the machine has a dial which shows if you are getting into the proper espresso range while doing the brewing. I couldn't get the dial to move and for a bit I thought it might be broken. But it's fine. It was a user issue. I was grinding the coffee too coarse.
Once I started using Canadian Kicking Horse Grizzly Claw whole coffee beans with the dual wall filter on grind level 3 with a moderate tamping only I finally had success. I do plan to continue experimenting with the other coffee beans I have bought as well.
I never had any trouble frothing the milk and now that I've greatly improved my brewing I may move on to latte art! There is a lot of info on latte art on U-Tube.
A few things to note, always clean the milk wand after each use and reset the steam after for a couple seconds to clean the inside of the wand. You can store the cleaning equipment in the small tray under the machine. Keep an eye on water levels as they do go down very quickly.Read more ›
The good: The end result espresso is solid. Good rich flavor, nice crema, (using fresh, quality beans helps this) frothing/steam wand works well and it's nice to have a metal wand rather than having to deal with plastic at high temperatures. The parts integration is well thought out for the most part and the brewing process is relatively streamlined. Until you've had real espresso, you don't know what you're missing. I can say with confidence that I won't be using my aeropress again. (For what it was though, the aeropress is a great little brewer. It's just not anywhere close to the league that true espresso is in)
It's pretty nice looking and a cool focal point of the kitchen. People ask about it often and it's been nice for entertaining. If you learn your espresso drinks people will be pretty happy when you can replicate their go-to order from the cafe.
I also like that it has hot water integration for tea or Americanos. (Why you would want to dilute an espresso is beyond me though.)
There is a lot of customization available with the grind size/amounts, and included single/double walled baskets in two shot sizes as well.
The bad: I'm somewhat of a neat freak, so having to clean all the individual parts after each use is a little time consuming. However, I find that it still takes less time start to finish than it would for me to get dressed and go pick up an espresso from a local cafe, and I can stay in the comfort of my apartment as well, so it's worth it on that end. That said, good espresso doesn't just happen.Read more ›
So why did I give 2 stars? Firstly, it was a great little machine, when it worked. Secondly, I give the second star to the repair shop Genius Coffee in Burnaby who really know what customer service is all about! Breville could really learn a thing or two from them!
