Product Description

Brody “Brutus” Jackson isn’t your average small-town mechanic. The shop where he spends his days doubles as the headquarters for the mercenary group he works with. They jokingly call themselves the Bang Shift because the government contracts they take are the less savory ones, and they’re all just shady enough to do what’s necessary to get the jobs done. As far as Brody’s concerned, it’s the perfect arrangement for a man with no memory of his past, and no hope for the future.

Under FBI protection, Alexandria Collins and her son have been in hiding for ten years. When it’s time to move again, her piece of crap car breaks down and the man giving her a tow is the biggest, hottest guy she’s ever seen. She is determined to ignore the need her long-neglected body hungers for. After all, the last man she showed interest in put a gun to her head.

Brody thinks the skittish Xan is sexy as hell, but it’s not her hot body that has him rocked to his core. He knows her from somewhere, and in his line of work, that’s a dangerous thing. Following orders have never been this hard, but when he finds out she’s his next assignment, he will protect her at all costs … even if what she needs protection from most is him.

Alexandria (Xan) and her son Scott are on the run in the Witness Protection Program where her old junker of a car breaks down and they have to get a tow from gorgeous hunk Brody. Xan sits in between Brody and Scott and already there are sparks flying between them, of course Xan knows it is too risky to get involved with anybody as she has too many secrets and Brody feels the same - do not get involved but that attraction cannot be denied. I liked all of the characters and there was lots of action (sexually and other) and I was kept guessing through it all. I give it 3 1/2 starts

Xan had been in the witness protection program for ten years, along with her teenage son, Scott, after turning her ex-husband in to the FBI because of his connection with the mafia. When he found out he tried to kill her. She had to change her name and move every few years. On her way to her new home, Xan's car broke down. She instantly lusts after the tow truck driver, Brody, but can't give into her desires because of her secrets. Brody isn't only a mechanic though. Along with the other men at the garage, he is secretly working for the FBI, amongst others as a contracted specialist. They take on jobs the government can't. One of those jobs is to protect Xan. Since Brody also lusts after Xan he's afraid to be near her. On top of that he had a head injury years earlier leaving him with no memory of his life before that time. When he sees Xan he knows she is familiar to him but doesn't know why.

Their attraction is so strong that they can't stay away from each other. But Brody's afraid he had been intimate with her, or worse, in his earlier life so tries to stay clear of her. When they find out Xan's ex is being released from prison, Brody tries to keep her and Scott safe.

I really liked this well written romantic suspense. It's heavy on the suspense but light on the romance. Lots of steamy sex though. There were lots of twists and turns to this story, keeping you guessing who the bad guy was. What a surprise ending! I loved not seeing that coming. Xan was a wonderful woman who coped with running and having to change her name and home every couple of years. Even with living such a stressful life, she was a great mother, always looking out for her son and trying to give him a normal life. Poor Brody.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings Dec 29 2014
By WindRider - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Bang Shift is a name that comes from some of the possibly shady mercenary work that Brody "Brutus" Jackson does on the side as he works as a mechanic in a small town. Its a nickname that the other guys he works with jokingly call it. Brody meets up with Alexandria Collins and her son who have been hiding under FBI/Witness protection for ten years. He meets her when her junk car needs a tow. She's scared of big guys and guys in groups for a good reason but she likes Brody right off the bat. Brody is not only attracted to Xan but he's afraid that he knows her from somewhere; but he can't remember. He lost years of his memory after an accident and now his new assignment is to protect Xan and her son. Looks like this is going to be a tough assignment for everyone.

I really had mixed feelings about this book. It started out really well, with action right off the bat. That really was a good setup for the story; I liked that. Things were moving right along and the story was flowing and I was enjoying it. Both "Brutus" and Xan were attracted to each other and the pull and their resistance was I thought pretty well written. Xan's son Scott, was well filled out as a character as well. There were some interesting secondary characters as well, Roxie (Xan's neighbor)and "Bear" another guy from the Bang Shift group. There's a story there about Roxie and Bear.... And Roc who works with the group? Doesn't sound like a good guy.

The language in this book is not clean and neither is the mental POV from Xan and Brutus; it was like listening to mental foreplay. And when "Brutus" and Xan finally did something about it, then there were page after page of very descriptive, rough sex. It like the story stopped while this went on. After some time the story finally picked back up and when it did it became more interesting to me because of the mysteries involved. There is a great twist at the end too.
All in all I think the story really didn't need quite so much sex in it. I don't like the "F" word anywhere and it was pretty much everywhere in the story. The lanuage was pretty rough at times. That's my own personal opinion and of course I'm sure not everyone agrees with me.
I probably would have rated it higher except for those things.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sexy and Suspenseful Jan. 13 2015

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This was a great story-line idea.

Xan Bradley is a woman in hiding from her abusive (murderous) ex-husband. She's wary of strangers - especially men, protective of her son and has trouble letting people into her life.

Brody is an intriguing man, with an uncertain past. He works as a mechanic in the small town that Xan and her son move to, but his real job is as part of a team that does "secret" government-type missions, and his latest assignment is Xan.

I will say that the Witness Protection story line is terrific. The characters are well developed, there is plenty of suspense and conflict, and there's a surprise at the end, that I DID NOT see coming.

It was a really entertaining read.

There was A LOT of sex - This didn't bother me, I've read books with more sex, and some of them not nearly as well-written.

Xan and Brody were literally unable to control themselves when they were together.

I understand passion - really. But seriously? Lady, you are in fear for your life. You and your son could be in danger, and you are completely unable to be in the same room with this man, because your clothes will start to fall off.

I can't tell you how many times Brody told himself not to be alone with Xan, because she couldn't control himself.
How many times Xan swore to herself that she would resist Brody, only to find herself overcome with lust.

Don't get me wrong, it made for a steamy good read. It was just a little silly that they couldn't be in the same room together without going at it at least once.

All in all, I recommend it - It was a great story, if you don't mind lots of sex and swear words.

Okay, so I'm a New Yorker. The "F" word is like an often used vowel, or verb in our vernacular, BUT. Here I am about 5% into this book and I am already turned off. Xan is a Mom with a 16 year old boy, stepping into a mechanics shop with all these alpha males. (My bro is Army, so I KNOW how they love their curse words) BUT these guys just let fly with all kinds of "pu**y" and F-bombs in front of the kid and a very skittish woman. A very skittish woman who also likes to curse.

I cannot believe this would be a desirable set-up to a book.

Then she somehow (even though she is afraid of men) finds the neandrathal sexy in a "HOLD ME DOWN AND F**K" me kind of way.

Not my idea of Romantic when I was searching for a good Romantic Suspense book. If I wanted low-class smut, I would have bought it!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for me! Dec 1 2014

While the synopsis of the book really drew me in, in the end, I was disappointed and halfway through the book, I almost just wanted to delete it from my Kindle and move on to the next book. However, I persevered and here are the things that I didn't care for.

Brutus/Brody: Unfortunately, I didn't care for the hero that much. For someone who's supposed to be getting close to the heroine in order to protect her, he's not doing a good job. Instead, he spends 40% of the book or so giving the heroine mixed signals. Yes, he wants to have sex with her. No, he doesn't. Yes, he does. When they finally do establish a sexual relationship, he makes it clear that there's no commitment; yet, he acts as if he owns her. As for getting close, why not start by being a friend first? What's all this Me Tarzan, You Jane thing happening.

Xan: Granted, this poor woman hasn't had sex with a man for 12 years so I can understand why she'd be so attracted to Brody. But woman, have a little pride. Granted, Brody is not as bad as her ex-husband who tried to kill her, but Brutus kind of lived to his name. He had no finesse when dealing with Xan and for the most part, didn't really treat her well, especially after they first had sex, where he kicked her out. Yet, when the opportunity came for her to be with Brody again, she took it.

The Mercenary Group: Brody is supposed to be part of this Mercenary Group, but the group itself seems to be a joke. Assignments seem to be handed haphazardly without any real briefing. Brody goes off the reservation to get more information about Xan without consulting his boss? This does not seem like a well-oiled team to me.

The Colonel aka the Boss of the Mercenary Group: What an ass! Disrespectful to women and even encouraged Brody to have sex with Xan as a way to keep close to her. Of course, the way he was provided foreshadowing for who he really was, which is also part of the reveal at the end of the book.

Sex? Love?: After a few sexual encounters, they suddenly have deep feelings for each other? I can understand a little bit where Brody is coming from and that has to do with the reveal that happens later on in the book, but even with that, I still don't see how it constitutes as love. As for Xan, after a bought of consensual rough sex, the first thing she thinks about is it might be time to trust her heart to another man. I'm thinking that perhaps she needs more to go on before making that kind of decision, don't you?

Xan's Back Story: The whole gist of the story is that Xan's abusive, criminal husband was put away for attempting to murder her because she had given evidence of his criminal activities to the FBI. Unfortunately, the evidence somehow disappeared, but because she testified against him, she and their son became part of the Witness Protection Program.

However, the meat of this back story was a little confusing and sometimes a bit convoluted. I know there was something about the mystery of a rogue or dirty FBI agent being responsible for the disappearing evidence and that there were three suspects and there was some other stuff going on. For some reason, I had a hard time following that story arc.

There's also the connection that Brody had with Xan in the past that he didn't quite remember because he had amnesia. Add a plot point where he may have done something to Xan's daughter that seemed a bit out of character. While I thought Brody was a bit of a jerk, he didn't seem to have that dark of a nature to do what he supposedly did.

At least, who that rogue FBI agent turned out to be was a bit surprising, if not unexpected, so at least, that's something, if not enough.

In the end, this book did not do it for me and I was more than happy to read the final word on the last chapter.

3.0 out of 5 stars Best part was the suspense, but it was overshadowed by the less than romantic sex. Jan. 27 2015
By MsRomanticReads - Published on

*Complimentary copy provided by the author for the purpose of an honest review*

Note: This book contains very graphic sex: anal sex, spanking, rough sex.

Alexandria "Xan" (32) grew up in foster homes. At sixteen she met and fell in love with Marco who showered her with love and attention. When she became pregnant with his child, they married, and then her world shattered. Fast forward twelve years, under FBI protection, she and her son are constantly on the run from the reaches of her ex-husband.

Xan was tougher than I expected her to be, especially after the rape and abuse by her husband and the death of her first child. It speaks a lot to her character that even after all she'd been through, she had the courage to make a break for it more than once. Despite a healthy dose of wariness of men, I was a little surprised that relieving a twelve year itch was even on a possibility. No strings attached sex may be the way to avoid getting too close to someone, but can a person be any more vulnerable, physically, than during sex?

Brody aka Brutus had no memory of his life save for the last decade. The Colonel took him in and gave him a job with Sheppard's Garage, a front for a group of mercenaries to include Roc, Blade, Hunter, Gage, and "Teddy" Bear. Then he met Xan for the first time, and she seemed familiar to him. He didn't get involved with married women or women with "baggage" so he decided to keep his distance. When she became his next assignment, and despite their mutual sexual attraction, he did everything to push her away. His hot and cold and gruff behavior made him come across as a complete jerk, though he kept apologizing for his behavior. I didn't warm up to him until much later.

The sexual relationship moved very quickly. Within twenty-four hours of their first meeting, they'd shared a steamy kiss, and not long after, they had sex. Xan's behavior confused me a little. During their kiss her insecurity about being "inexperienced" reared itself. That I could believe, but then she seemed to easily take control of the sexual exploration of his body, inserted a finger up his rear, and deep throated him. She didn't appear that inexperienced. When he tried to take it further, sex itself seemed to petrify her. By the 50% point, they'd had sex four or five times, and every scene was scorching hot.

The best part of this book was the suspense. The author did a very good job of keeping me guessing about all characters involved, who was good? Who was on the take? How guilty or innocent was Brody? And a few surprising revelations that upped the tension. For me, the sex and Brody's indecisiveness overshadowed the great suspense plot. The other characters didn't grab me, so I won't continue this series. However, I would read something else by this author.
