Product Description

When happy-ever-after is only the beginning…

Lara Cartwright thinks she has it all. Married to a sexy rock star, with a new baby and a burgeoning career, she should be happy, shouldn’t she? But life isn’t a fairy tale and Lara’s perfect world is slowly falling apart.

Alex Cartwright is talented, tattooed and passionate. A family man, he adores his wife and baby, but can’t shake off his need for success. When his band is offered a lucrative tour of the US, the distance growing between him and Lara isn’t only measured in miles. As their baby falls seriously ill, Lara finds herself wondering if Alex really cares for them at all.

Emotional and absorbing, Broken Chords is a story of desire, redemption and the crazy notion that love can still conquer all.

Author Note: Broken Chords is the second story in the Love in London series but can be read completely as a stand-alone.

This was my first Carrie Elks read, and I loved it! I really liked how this book is not based on any kind of bells and whistles. It is a real portrayal of how a relationship evolves between two people who love each other after the birth of their first child. The story is told through the perspective of Lara, and you really find yourself feeling for her as she struggles in her identities as new mother and wife. I liked the honesty that Elks brought in showing the real challenges that mothers face in terms of returning to work, and negotiating the division of labour with their partners at home. I found that I was much more invested in Lara's character for the first half of the book, and I was disappointed in Alex (her husband). But the thing is that I believe that Elks wanted us to be disappointed in him. She wanted to show how this person who was supposed to be a MAIN character in Lara's life had somehow become a supporting character after the birth of their son. But then the second half of the book hits, and we see Alex fighting to get back on the main stage again, and it is so great! I will definitely be reading more by this author!

Carrie Elks writes with a powerful, edgy realism to her work that makes her stories a compelling and gripping read. Broken Chords is the second book I’ve read by Ms Elks and I went into it with high expectations. The story deals with that wonderful and terrible time of adjustment a couple go through with the birth of their first child. In this case, we have Lara battling with that new sense of who she is, and her beloved, sexy husband, Alex who is trying to launch his music career. About halfway through this book I was no longer speaking to my husband, as Ms Elks recreated that period in my life with such startling and heartbreaking clarity. You feel for these characters, ache for their happy ending and share their pain. By the end, I was emotional wrung out, but uplifted. Ms Elks will take you right into the depth of these characters and their struggle, and sweep you up in a happy ending that leaves you truly satisfied. I highly, highly recommend.

I was thrilled to receive an ARC is exchange for an honest review.
