Product Description

It was at Lula Lounge, Toronto, that the Gryphons proved their commitment to changing the context for chamber music. Working with jazz and world-music artists, the Trio launched a series of programs that thrilled audiences. One of those programs, featuring tangos, pop tunes and Mexican folksongs, reunited the Gryphons with their Constantinople partners, O'Callaghan and Occhipinti, and led to Broken Hearts & Madmen. Produced again by Occhipinti, a classically trained jazz musician renowned for his work in Latin music who has also toured with experimental hip-hop stars Gorillaz, it was recorded like a pop album, with live in-studio performances and close miking of the musicians. Musically, the album is global in spirit, mixing Latin songs with jazz-tinged tunes by some of pop's most revered composers.

A Vivoscene Feature Article by Brian Miller

vivoscene rating 9.5

The Canadian chamber music group Gryphon Trio is about to release Broken Hearts & Madmen, and the record is surely a contender for the crossover album of this young decade, as well as getting our vote for one of the great album titles of all time. With material from such a diverse crowd as Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen, Laurie Anderson and Lhasa de Sela, the record was made in a live-like atmosphere of complete takes and closely-miked quarters. The result is absolutely breathtaking in its attention to detail, with every note carved from their love of the songs and their obvious ease with each other.

Such is hardly the case in most attempts of classical musicians taking on disparate genres, but 2011 has been a year of musical surprises. The Ebene Quartet delighted us some months back with their audacious release Fiction, but Gryphon Trio surpasses that notable quartet handily. Several factors facilitate their success, among them the guest vocalisations of Patricia O'Callaghan and presence of jazz bass player and producer Roberto Occhipinti, a classically trained musician renowned for his work in Latin music, and who has toured with experimental hip-hop band Gorillaz.

Patricia O'Callaghan is no stranger to cabaret, Cohen, or classical. In fact, she's one of the best singers ever to come out of Canada. Born and raised in Northern Ontario, Canada at seventeen she lived in Mexico for a year as an exchange student. It was there that she had an epiphany one day and decided she should become an opera singer.

HASH(0xa78aefb4) out of 5 stars Broken Hearts & Madmen: a chamber music album "unlike any other" June 17 2014
By Roger Bourke - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Broken Hearts & Madmen is an album of pop music, World music and Latin American music recorded by the Juno Award-winning Canadian chamber music ensemble the Gryphon Trio and the Canadian singer Patricia O'Callaghan that was released by the Analekta label in September 2011. Produced by the Toronto-based jazz musician Roberto Occhipinti, the album gained a four-star rating from the AllMusic website. It contains an unusual and inspired mix of "dark" (or what AllMusic termed "nocturnal") modern-day Anglo-Canadian folk and pop songs (Nick Drake’s “River Man”, Leonard Cohen’s “The Gypsy’s Wife”, Elvis Costello’s “I Want You”) and mainly traditional Latin American folksongs sung (in Spanish) by O'Callaghan. The AllMusic reviewer James Manheim commented: "It's not easy in this eclectic age to juxtapose musical items that have never been in proximity before, but Canada's Gryphon Trio and soprano Patricia O'Callaghan manage to do so on this recording, which proclaims itself unlike any previous chamber music album … What's striking is how well the combination of rock-era English-language music and Latin song works." A music video of the recording of “River Man” appears on both the Gryphon Trio’s and O’Callaghan’s official websites. Broken Hearts & Madmen was produced with financial assistance from the Government of Quebec and the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage's Canada Music Fund.
