Product Description

When Theodore Davenport decides to switch his mundane job for a career, he walks into Holden House Publishing with enthusiasm and determination to succeed. As he settles into his new role, makes new friends, and dreams of making it to the top, everything is going to plan.

Until he meets James Holden, CEO of Holden House.

James Holden hasn’t been able to stop thinking about his encounter with the timid man he met in a club bathroom last week, and when he discovers the one haunting his dreams is an employee, he can’t seem to stop himself from pursuing him.

Just a little fun - that’s what James tells himself. He can’t afford to care for someone who can never reciprocate, not once they find out who he really is. James believes nobody deserves the burden of being attached to him. He’s a complicated man. Damaged. Difficult. Demanding.

Broken.

Is Theodore strong enough to confront James’ demons? More importantly, is James?

(M/M romance. Not suitable for readers under 18 years of age due to language and sexual content. ***Please note*** This book contains scenes of self harm, mental illness and suicidal ideation which may be uncomfortable for some readers.)

This read was not was not what I expected in a very good way: it exceeded my expectations. The blurb about a young publishing intern falling for his aloof boss with a dark side made me think of a Christian Grey type of story. Boy! Was I wrong and glad to be! This beautiful romance between two well developped characters touches sensitive subjects that could have been a disaater if not so well handled. I had a hard time saying goodbye to the story.

Nicola Haken is now on my automatic one-click authors list.

Holy cow I loved this story. James's story reminds us that mental illness is just that an illness like all other illnesses and you can have a life. People will love you. I really felt his pain and the self hate he had. Theo learned to love James in spite of fear. They both learned talking helps . I think this story can help us understand a little of what it's like to deal with mental illness from both sides of the table. This book will have you feeling all sorts of emotions. I highly recommend this book

This is an emotional book that is told by dual p.o.v's. I couldn't put it down. It's a story of love and heartache and the importance of being patient and kind with those with mental illness. It's a standalone. I will be looking up this authors other books!

This book was a really pleasant surprise. I always hesitate when I know one of the characters is described as being dark, angsty, messed up, etc. because I so often find that those characters lack depth. This story was a little more on the insta-love side than I normally like, but what the author does really, really well is writing James' scenes in a way that made me really believe in his diagnosis. Anyone familiar with bipolar disorder will see the warning signs early in his narrative, though those unfamiliar will only start to notice as his condition worsens, which I thought was a really masterful portrayal of how easy it is for someone to fall prey to their own degrading thought patterns, and how easy it is for those with mental illness to hide it. I also really appreciated the emphasis on Theo's side - his fear of not being enough, his worry that he should have done more, known somehow, and the efforts of those around him to help him understand that James' illness is just a part of him.

Mental illness in romance stories is often portrayed without a real understanding of these diseases and with heaps of dangerous, unhealthy stereotypes (you can't cure depression by loving someone. It doesn't work that way.) Nicola Haken doesn't fall into that trap, and for that I'm so grateful to see a realistic portrayal of what it is to love someone with this kind of disorder.

It's hard to fully describe in words how incredible this book was. The range of emotions I felt while reading it was unlike anything I've ever felt before. I laughed, I felt scared, I got angry, I was heartbroken, I cried, and I felt hope.

I can't commend Nicola Haken enough with how artfully she handled a tough subject like mental illness. There is still a stigma attached to mental illness in our society. Not many people bother to look past at what's behind those that they deem "crazy". They don't see the daily struggles, the bad times, and the fear. They also don't see the achievements, the good days, and the hope. Nicola Haken managed to convey all of these things with James and Theodore's story. It was raw and real, and ultimately beautiful even with all the scars.

PS: Make sure to listen to Theo's "Get the **** Better" playlist and do it backwards, just like James.

James, the protagonist, isn't a perfect man who simply screwed up. He feels broken after being diagnosed as bipolar. It gives him the reason but doesn't fix any of his issues. Throw in a high pressure career, family issues and grief for his father and he is primed for a break. But he accidentally 'meets' a lonely man in a club and discovers he's his newest employee. Neither can stay away from the other, though both believe they should, and slowly they learn each is what the other needs. Well written and emotional, you can't help but empathize, and cheer as their walls slowly come down.
