Chazz Palminteri wrote the script for this excellent story of an Italian American boy (Lillo Brancato) who grows up in the 1960s caught between the strong influences of his blue-collar, straight- arrow father (Robert De Niro) and a Mafia chieftain (Palminteri) who is his all-purpose mentor. De Niro makes his directorial debut with this production and, except for a little stiffness, does very well by the characters and their world. The story does not go precisely where one might expect it to go: Palminteri knows better than to force the central figure to choose between the two most important men in his life, and he doesn't fill time with stock drama about crime or family conflict. Joe Pesci makes an extremely effective and uncredited appearance at the end as a man who doesn't have to do more than speak softly to communicate how dangerous he is. The DVD release contains the theatrical trailer and optional French and Spanish soundtracks. --Tom Keogh

This movie is definitely in my top five of all-time, maybe top three. It is, in my opinion, perhaps Robert DeNiro's best performance- and that is saying a LOT! He is very believable as Calogero's hard-working father (Lorenzo)- one who just wants to teach his son the "right thing" to do, even when it is confusing. DeNiro also directed the movie. Chazz Palmintieri does a great job as Sonny, the neighborhood Mob boss who tries to steer Calogero away from the streets and keep him in school. These two men have different methods, but both seem to genuinely have Calogero's best interests at heart. The rest of the cast is fun, and the "guys"- such as Eddie Mush and Jimmy Whispers- are colorful and provide laughs, as well as a good background for the film. (Sopranos fans will recognize Lorenzo's wife as Charmaine Bucco, Artie's wife!) All in all, a masterpiece of a film.

To me this is one of the greatest movies of all time on many levels. Primarilly, the character development is extremely deep. Anyone watching this movie can understand the strengths and fears of Lorenzo, Sonny, Colegelo, as well as some of the more supporting players. Secondly, the story depicts race relations at a changing time in this country. It describes it without taking sides and showing lots of grey areas. Not just black and white. Thirdly, it shows the innerworkings of organized crime and how people in today's society are influenced by it. Finally, the conflict Cologelo experiences by being torn between two role models, his father and the neighborhood good fellow crime boss who acts like a fatherly figure, is the central theme and explored very well through each charactes eyes. Overall, this movie has nos wasted moments and will keep you hooked from start to finish.

What riveting performances Palminteri and De Niro Turn in on this excellently written (by Palminteri) and scripted film. Palminteri's performance will have you spellbound from his very first scene until his tragic final one. De Niro does an excellent job of directing here. De Niro also paints a very impassioned and sympathetic picture of an Italian father (the role originally played by Palminteri on Broadway) fighting desperately to win his son back from a ruthless, but charming mobster. De Niro is truly the greatest actor of all time. Another standout is Lillo Brancato as De Niro's confused but basically good son Callogero, torn between the mentoring of criminal Sonny and his dad, Lorenzo. One of the greatest movies of all time. Definitely worth watching and rewatching over and over again. Truly a first class movie all the way!

The first time I ever saw A Bronx Tale I fell in love with it. It quickly became my favorite movie of all time. I go to West Virginia University and I made almost my entire floor watch it and all of them thanked me and said that it was one their favorites as well. De Niro proves that he can play more than a tough guy in this movie. I find myself reciting lines from this movie very often. I cannot wait to get it back from my friend to watch it again. Take an Italian's word for it, if you buy this movie, you will not be disappointed.

In his directorial debut, Robert DeNiro wisely took the kind of film he is known for as an actor: The gangster film. But A Bronx Tale is much more then just another gangster piece, and it succeeds mostly in its veering away from the usual fare.
DeNiro plays a father trying to make an honest living in the Bronx during the 1960's. But when his son "C" finds himself allured by the Mafia "godfather," Sonny (Chez Pallimetri), doing business out of a neighboring bar, DeNiro tries to steer his son clear of danger. Soon, however, "C" is looking up to Sonny as a second father, and DeNiro feels threatened.
Rather then focusing on the crime, it emphasizes the family drama, drawing comparisons between the crime family and blood ties. And fortunately, for the most part, A Bronx Tale avoids common clichés and hokey outcomes that dramas concerning family often hit. Instead, it creates an involving situation where no one is portrayed as pure evil.
The film is not without its problems, however. At times the film suffers from over explanation, mostly through the use of narration by an older "C." He repeatedly states the moral of the tale at the end of the film, when one doesn't need to be stated at all. It's something viewers should decide for themselves, with at most, a hint by the narrator. Also, the film could have used more scenes with just "C" and his father, as well as with Sonny, to better crystallize their relationships. While what's in the film is enough to get a good idea, it doesn't fully explore the tension and characterization. The film could benefit from an additional twenty minutes or so to fully flesh out everything.
But overall, A Bronx Tale provides a satisfying, and often times nostalgic look into family ties in 1960's New York. It's well worth the price to own.
