INTO EACH GENERATION A SLAYER IS BORN. Now you can own the entire first season of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. All 12 classic episodes are available for the first time in this exclusive 3-disc collectors edition. From Welcome to the Hellmouth, The Harvest and Angel to Nightmares, Out of Mind, Out of Sight and Prophecy Girl, these Season One episodes are a must for every true Buffy fan.
Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) looks like your typical perky high-schooler, and like most, she has her secret fears and anxieties. However, while most teens are worrying about their next date, their next zit, or their next term paper, Buffy's angsting over the next vampire she has to slay. See, Buffy, a young woman with superhuman strength, is the "chosen one," and she must help rid the world of evil, namely by staking demons. The exceptional first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer introduces us to the treacherous world of Sunnydale High School (where Buffy moved after torching her previous high school's gym). The characters there include "watcher" Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) and the original "Scooby Gang" members--friendly geek Xander (Nicholas Brendon), computer whiz Willow (Alyson Hannigan), and snobbish popular girl Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter)--who aid Buffy in her quest. Those used to the darker tone that Buffy took in its later seasons will be surprised by the lighter feeling these first 12 episodes have--it's kind of like Buffy 90210 as the cast grapples with regular teen problems in addition to saving the world from demonic darkness. Fans of the show will enjoy the crisp writing, the phenomenal chemistry of the cast (already well-established within the first few episodes), and the introduction to characters that would stay for many seasons, including moody vampire Angel (David Boreanaz). Through it all, Gellar carries the series with amazing confidence, whether conveying the despair of high school or dispatching various demons--she's one of TV's most distinctive and strongest heroines. --Mark Englehart

Watching these episodes I was struck by the talented writing and acting that were present right from the beginning. It is immediately apparent that the show was never intended to be yet another scary film take-off. From Sarah Gellar to Anthony Head the actors display an almost effortless professionalism. And the writing is filled with the kind of bright dialog and wit to which us adults can only aspire.
This set contains the first 12 episodes which are all there was of the first season. Officially, that's from ''Welcome to the Hellmouth' to 'Prophecy Girl'. It's hard to pick one out as a favorite, but I'm currently very fond of 'Teacher's Pet' in which Xander's woes remind me of much of my own early history. All are wonderful, and I no longer think of myself as one of the BTVS disadvantaged.
In addition to the episodes themselves, there are interviews with Joss Whedon and David Boreanaz, a full length commentary on 'Welcome to the Hellmouth' by Whedon, who also provides several interviews. Television trailers, photo stills, and the original pilot script are there as well. Languages alternatives are English and French (also available in surround sound). Spanish and English subtitles are also provided. Sound and video quality are excellent. I had a problem getting the second and third DVD's to play on my PC, which were resolved by updating the DVD drive's firmware.
Welcome to the Hellmouth/The Harvest: 9.5/10
This is a great start to the whole thing, and begins right away with an impending apocalypse. We get a glimpse of the Big Bad right away, and you already know his intentions. It really forces you to keep watching, which I'm sure was Joss Whedon's goal here. We are introduced to our lovable characters, Xander (Nicholas Brendon), and Willow (Alyson Hannigan). We're also introduced to Angel (David Boreanaz), portraying to know more than he really should, Darla (Julie Benz) the annoying vampiress poster girl, The Master, and of course, Mr. Giles (Anthony Stewart Head). The fight at the end of the Harvest, and in the middle with Darla and the Vessel are excellent.
Witch - 8/10
Explores for Buffy's first attempt at normalcy, aside from slayage. She tries out for a cheerleading squad, but one of the girls seems to be a bit obsessed with getting on the squad, using witchcraft to terrorize the participants, including Buffy. Nice twist, but a little boring, IMO.
Teacher's Pet - 7/10
A new substitute teacher comes in for science class, named Natalie French. She's hot, and Xander falls for her, of course she's kinda has a thing with virgin boys. Cool episode, but nothing special really.Read more ›
Season One is definitely one of my favorite seasons. It only contains twelve episodes, due to it being a mid-season replacement, but each one is filled with a new exciting theme. The main villain, however, is The Master Vampire. Buffy's objective is to stop him from rising, while dodging everyone he sends to try to stop her. Aside from this problem, there are a couple of episodes that have nothing to do with him, which I think is nice because it offered a break with side-episodes such as "Witch" and "Out of Mind, Out of Sight." Even with an outline of only twelve episodes, Joss Whedon (creator) and friends still manage to fit in these extras without taking away from the main point.
As for the actual DVD boxed set, it couldn't have gotten much better. It has a few nice photos and a small booklet inside which describes each episode.Read more ›

Love the series but the menu is annoying to go through after every episode. A marathon feature would be a great addition.Published 20 months ago by A

Great series, great price. For all those more traditional vampire fans this is definitely a series to watch. As far as packaging it is in the slim dvd case as shown.Published on Oct. 16 2013 by Heather A. Nicholson
This season was very well done and very well anticipated! It layes the foundations for all the future funness that is Buffy which comes after. :)Published on Oct. 19 2004 by giles_is_hip
