About the Author

As the executive director and founder of Kidpower Teenpower Fullpower International, author Irene van der Zande has empowered thousands of parents and other caring adults around the world to take charge of the emotional and physical safety of their kids and other loved ones. As a child who was bullied long ago, Irene promised herself that she would never forget what it was like to feel so alone, sad, and scared. She believes passionately that kids have the right to be safe and the responsibility to respect the safety of others. She is committed to giving adults the tools they need to create cultures of caring, respect, and safety for everyone, everywhere. Irene established Kidpower as a nonprofit organization in 1989 in partnership with educators, parents, mental health experts, child safety specialists, law enforcement officials, and other caring adults. She has led the organization ever since. Instead of using fear to teach children about violence prevention, Kidpower makes it fun to learn to be safe. This is important because kids learn better when they're having fun. The Kidpower Positive Practice Method empowers kids with habits that build their awareness, confidence, and personal power, making them less likely to become victims of bullying, abduction, abuse and other types of physical or emotional violence. Operating in over 20 countries, Kidpower has reached over 2 million people of all ages through in-person workshops and events, publications tailored for different needs, on-line educational resources, videos, and long distance seminars and one-on-one coaching. I have seen the positive impact of Kidpower resources within various schools and organizations. Each product has had a profound effect on increasing the well being of all students, teachers, and parents reached by their words. Bullying - What Adults Need to Know and Do to Keep Kids Safe is both entertaining while providing information regarding how to deal with bullying in a proactive and sustainable way. The techniques, practices, and methods covered throughout the book can be applied to all walks of life, not just those who are victims of bullying.

This is the first time I have found and read a book that deals with bullying in a very hands-on and unique way.
The book has has given me so MANY simple, yet comprehensive, ways to help kids deal with bullying.
I like the way it helps me as an adult to DO something! To actually give kids tools on how to handle bullying and to get ideas on how I as an adult can support kids.
A extremely practical book - and the great thing is the kids love learning the practices!
I would recommend this book to any adult who wants to do something positive against bullying - here is your chance to get knowledge and ideas!

I just finished reading "Bullying: What adults need to know to keep kids safe" (by Irene Van derSand) WOW!!!! This is a must read for any parent, teacher, school administrator--any responsible adult who works with children and cares about both physical AND emotional safety of children. I absolutely loved it. It is well-organized, describing step by step what to do, and covers all of the important topics. It aligns with what I teach: non-violence but assertive empowerment to help break the cycle of bullying. It includes examples of verbal responses for standing up to all kinds of bullying situations. I appreciate the emphasis on learning a skill, then practicing it to help it become engrained (in my program we call it "practice, practice") because it's hard to think of nice things to say when someone is bullying! Adults should provide opportunities to practice over and over how and what to say in a way that will contribute to reducing or ending the problem rather than adding to the problem. You will NOT be disappointed with this book!!!
