This book is amazing. Being gf for 5+ years I have a collection of gf flours. This book only requires a few flours compared to many other gf recipes. Needless to say it is good if you are a beginner who is overwhelmed by most gf recipes because of the numerous amount of ingredients that require several trips to several stores. Another great thing about this book is all the ingredients can be found locally (in the TO/GTA area) very easily. I usually find many other gf blogs and books that are American based very inconvenient because the ingredients are easily available in the US but not so much here. And if you happen to find them...its overpriced. My third and final point about this book is that it doesn't require or demand organic items that cost a tiny fortune - most (not all) ingredients are non-organic....and if you have an organic/non-organic preference you can replace them as you feel fit. Absolutely love this book and since going gf and egg-free its been a life saver! Thank you Bunners!!

As vegans, Toronto residents Ashley Wittig and Kevin MacAllister understand the feeling of exclusion at the table. They also sympathize with those with food allergies, sensitivities or other dietary restrictions. Thus, they started Bunner's Bake Shop together as a table at farmers' markets, selling gluten-, egg-, dairy-, nut- and soy-free baked goods. Realizing they had a brisk business, they opened a bakery in The Junction neighbourhood of Toronto's west end. In their first cookbook, the pair share traditional recipes made with non-traditional ingredients and prove that everything from cinnamon buns to mac and cheese can taste delicious with a few substitutions.

The authors devote an entire chapter to holiday favourites with recipes for Pumpkin Pie, Gingerbread, Sugar Cookies and Savoury Holiday Stuffing. Canadian mainstays such as Nanaimo Bars, Butters Tarts and Blueberry Grunt also make an appearance as do a host of muffins, cookies, cakes and pies. For readers new to gluten-free, vegan baking, Bunner's proves that it’s not as difficult as people expect. In fact, in many ways gluten-free flours are more forgiving; after all, one needn't worry about overworking pastry dough.

Wittig and MacAllister may ostensibly advertise specific brands but they do stress that they have "tried everything” to achieve the best result. If they tout Bob’s Red Mill, Camino or Earth Balance, it’s because they’ve had genuine success with it. Ultimately, Bunner's produces treats that invoke pride and defy excuses, ones that taste delicious and classic to anyone regardless of dietary needs.

So far all of the sweet recipes I've made have turned out horrible. The chocolate chip cookies, red velvet cupcakes, and the blondies. The Mac and cheese was okay at best, but not nearly as good as the store. I kind of feel like they made each measurement slightly off so that it would turn out bad on purpose. A way to keep customers coming to the store maybe? I don't know. But I had such high hopes, and am very disappointed. The store is amazing though, so at least there's that.

Sadly, not what I was hoping for. The two stars are being awarded because the buttercream recipes are awesome. But that's about it. All of the cakes that I've tried have tasted SO strongly of beans that they were unpalatable. Two entire batches of muffins in the garbage. Sure, the texture was good, but the taste was overpowering and no amounts of cocoa or sugar or fats could cover it up.

I like this recipe book very much. I miss an index of items and recipes in more detail at the back of the book. I find Have to used Table of Contexts and it only takes me to the beginning of a chapter not right to the recipe I am looking for.

I have tried the pancakes and love them so does my husband.

Gluten free baking can be quite a challenge when it comes to mixing flours and binding agents. These recipes are gluten free, vegan and nut free and provide information about the types of flours used. The treats are beautifully photographed as well!
