About the Author
TOM VENUTO is a fat-loss expert, health and fitness writer and steroid-free bodybuilder. Tom holds a degree in exercise science and is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the International Society for Sports Nutrition (ISSN), the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), the International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO) and the North American Association for the Study of Obesity (NAASO).

It was a bit of a redundant read for me, but I have recommended it to friends who are trying to start learning about nutrition.
The largest part of the book is devoted to nutrition and it is simply excellent- whether your goal is fat loss, muscle gain, general health or all the above! I have cross referenced some of his nutritional info with other books- such as Power Eating -written by RD's and he is clearly an expert in this area.
His programming recommendations for cardio and weight training are top notch as well, which comes as no surprise given his background(Tom has competed as a natural bodybuilder and holds a degree in exercise science). What's impressive, though, is his ability to zero in on the factors that are really important in a way that any reader can understand. At times, I can over analyze things with my training(probably because I've read too much!) and this book always seems to redirect me back into focus. To those new to exercise, Tom explains the importance behind these elements to the program. For experienced exercisers and bodybuilders, too, he guides you back to the fundamentals you may have strayed from.
In conclusion, I urge anyone that wants to get healthier and improve their body composition, in the process, to get this book. I cannot recommend it enough!
The purpose of the book is not to "lose weight", "shed pounds", or "get ripped abs in 20/min day."
The purpose of the book is to help you set real, achievable, and desirable goals for yourself and then lay out a plan for getting there.
You won't be "losing weight" you'll be burning fat. Typical weight loss (water, fat, and muscle) is not the goal.
You won't be "shredding abs" you'll be building and maintaining lean muscle as well as training your heart.
The result of eating well, building muscle, and training aerobically will be lost fat, a reshaped body, and the ability to do more physically while enjoying life.
This is not a 5-minute miracle book. This is a lesson in choosing goals and doing what's needed to achieve them. Oh, and you may just see abs at the end of the process!
If you're just starting out and need to learn some basics then this is an excellent book to get you started. It will spell everything out to you from beginning to end and it will teach you how much you should be eating to fuel your body properly for exercise. So many people that I work with on a daily basis follow fad diets or don't eat nearly enough (or eat in the proper macros) to actually burn fat or gain muscle the right way and then they either get stuck in a plateau or they gain it back and they wonder why. You're not going to burn fat and/or build muscle by starving yourself. This book will teach you step by step how to figure out how much you should be eating and what you should be focusing on in your workouts.
While there is still a bit of fluff in here, it's a pretty solid book and an easy read. There are a lot of accessible charts and forms that you can access on the accompanying website as well. Make sure you follow the steps outlined in the book and you should notice some level of success.
