A community is shaken.
Parents turn desperate.
Friends hold vigils.
And the boy who loves her searches.

When a year goes by,
The community is recovering.
Parents feel hopeless.
Friends feel helpless.
And the boy who loves her continues his search.

When ten years go by,
The community has forgotten.
Parents cling to the past.
Friends move toward the future.
And the boy who loves her . . .

Brings her home.

Jade Childs spent ten years in captivity, but now that she’s back, the real battle for survival begins. The media shadows her. Flashbacks haunt her. Her old life evades her. Her so-called new life rejects her. She spent too many years in the dark to recognize the light. She spent too long repressing her feelings to remember how to express them. She spent a decade abandoning hope and cannot dare letting it back into her life. Jade’s not just defined by what happened to her—she’s collared to it.

When the twenty-seven-year-old woman is found,
A community wants to know the story,
Parents want to forget the story,
Friends want to be a part of the story,
And the man who still loves her faces the greatest challenge yet: letting her go.

Reviewed by Sharon Thérèse Nuttall

I've just finished this book after reading it in two sittings and literally have no idea how to start this review. My emotions were stretched to the limit; it left me numb, happy, sad, plain exhausted. Told in present tenses from the female protagonist’s point of view, I found the grammatical structure used a feat in itself considering that the subject is extremely delicate and revolves around past events. Comprehensibly, this book isn’t overflowing with banter and neither did I feel the need for it. Nevertheless, what dialogue there is between all the characters is extremely good, especially in chapter one where we get to know two teenagers madly in love with each other. Then boom! From here on in I was taken on a staggeringly heart-breaking journey. Never in a million years could I ever have imagined the twist that was to come. I. Was. Stupefied! In fact, there are more bends than in a wiggly hairpin which only added to unlimited angst. At the end of the story, I didn’t know what to do with myself and as I’m still suffering from a monstrous book hangover, my thoughts on a high, low… totally out of control, picking up another read is for now, out of the question.

What can I tell you about Jade Childs’ traumatic teenage experience without giving anything away? I instantly invested in this happy and outgoing lass; however, something didn’t seem to ring true. It was all too perfect, too beautiful. In a split of a second, her life is shattered to smithereens and in another, the ground was pulled from underneath my feet. What should have been the best moments in her youth converted into ten long years of utter agony; every detail is crudely described and I can honestly say that I wasn’t prepared for such a fallout.

WHOA...just wow. What a beautiful and heart-wrenching story of an unbreakable bond, of healing, and above all else, TRUE love. The kind of love that REFUSES to be broken by tragedy, regret, or time. Collared was so refreshing in it's uniqueness. I find myself searching for books like this. A story that has NEVER been told before. When I do, I want the book to last forever but I can't stop reading it at the same time. That's what this book was like for me.

'It's not over and you know it. Time, circumstance, tragedy-nothing can change that. You and me, there isn't an over for us.'

At 17 years old Jade and Torrin share a love that is intense. A bond that is unbreakable. They've been friends and neighbors since they were children but that friendship grew to love when they reached their teens. Even at their young age, they know that they will spend the rest of their lives together. And I BELIEVED it as much as they did. But evil lurks everywhere, even in a small town that has always felt like a safe place. Jade is kidnapped and held prisoner for ten long years. While the whole world seems to give up on the idea that she is still alive, Torrin never loses hope that she has somehow survived. He never stopped fighting to bring her home. She is rescued after ten years but her time in captivity has obviously changed her. The world is a different place and Jade is a different person.

'He didn't just look for me. He didn't just keep believing. He found me. He failed better until he got it right. Those ten years I thought I was so very alone, I really wasn't. He was still there, looking. Searching. Finding. That tether might have stretched and pulled near it's breaking point, but he never let go. He was with me then too.

I was disappointed at the twist in the story. I guessed the ending as soon as I read the hospital scene. I really wanted to like this book, but it wasn't what I thought it would be.

HASH(0x9dbe936c) out of 5 stars 5 Unforgettable Stars!!!! March 14 2016
By Ms.Meesh - Published on
Format: Paperback
“You’re the boy next door, Torrin. My boy next door.”

I have read several books from Nicole Williams and hands down Collared is by far my favorite book that she has written. As I sit here and write my review, I can’t seem to find the right words to describe the magnitude of emotions coursing through me. This book was so much more than your typical romance novel. It was a story that gripped you to the core, shattered your heart and yet left you feeling at peace at the possibility of hope, new beginnings, and an earth-shattering kind of love between two soul-mates.

Collared was one of those reads that consumed your mind and heart. I know for a fact, it is unlike anything I have read before. Nicole took her readers down on an emotional journey of survival and finding that light and closure. She wrote a story that was utterly heartbreaking and yet profoundly devastatingly beautiful. It was written in such a raw, powerful, and touching way that readers like myself could FEEL everything for the characters and the heart and soul that Nicole Williams poured into her story. She allowed readers to see beyond the words but feel the sadness, helplessness, the anger, the love, the hope, the vulnerability and everything in between.

“For a moment, I let myself believe that nothing has changed and he’s the same boy who asked me to marry him . . . someday . . . one day . . . barefoot and grinning. I let myself get carried away by that moment. I let myself feel the only joy I’ve felt in ten years. I let myself feel it . . . then I take an imaginary pin and pop it. That life died the night I died to the world. That life is gone.”

Jade Childs fell in loved with the boy next door. Torrin Costigan loved Jade with all his heart. This was no ordinary first love. It was the real deal. The kind of love that was earth-shattering. Unforgettable. The kind of love that you know without a doubt that you were meant for each other. Promises were made for forever. And so what happens when everything that Jade dreamed, hoped, and love were shattered?

“I’ll never finish falling in love with you.”

When Jade Child was kidnapped in front of her home when she was seventeen years old, her family, her community and her boyfriend, Torrin Costigan searched for her. Even as ten years had gone by, Torrin never gave up on his search for Jade. So when Jade is found, can she ever have the chance to live a normal life? Or will she find herself feeling collared and shackled to the painful memories of her captivity?

“You were my first. And you were my last.” His words echo in the small space. “A man could have a thousand different partners and settle down with an amazing woman, and I’d still hold the bragging rights. Don’t feel sorry for me for that. I’m not.”

Nicole Williams writes a bold and raw emotional tale of love, forgiveness, hope, sadness, anger, and starting over. She captures our hearts with grace, beauty, and sensitivity over this tough and harrowing subject matter. I absolutely loved everything about this book. It is one of those reads that you must experience and savor as this book pulls all the right heartstrings. Nicole more than pulled the all the right strings, she tethered us along the journey of new beginnings and the belief that soul-mates do exists. So if you are looking for a story that will unleash a magnitude of emotions but will leave you at peace, then I highly recommend you to read this book.

Thank you Nicole Williams for writing a story that is just more. And most importantly reminding us all, it is not how many people you meet in your lifetime, but meeting the one person who will change your life forever.

“I told you I loved you for the first time thirteen years ago. It didn’t come with an expiration date. It never.”

HASH(0x9dbe93c0) out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful...A MUST READ!!! March 21 2016
By Heavenly L. - Published on
Format: Paperback
I feel like anything I write will be so inadequate to convey the beauty of the words within this story...I devoured this book from start to finish, staying up late because I couldn't put it down.

This story starts out with Torrin and Jade in the throes of young love. They have a conviction and certainty about each other that is rarely seen in people so young.

"I guess that’s the way it is with love. Everyone’s a pain in the ass in their own way. The goal’s to find the person whose pain-in-the-ass is worth putting up with. I’ve found mine."

But then the unthinkable happens...just when we get a feel for these two and their intense feelings, it's ripped away, and we are suddenly thrust into a new reality; one that is such a stark contrast, your heart can't help but break for Jade.

"Another part never wants to stop dreaming about him because that’s all I had left of him—dreams"

When Jade is finally able to go home, nothing is as it was. Her struggles to reacclimate were painful to read. There are no easy answers. It's real and raw, and heartbreaking.

"I’m starting to wonder if the whole point of life is to see how much each person can take before they break."

Her relationship with Torrin has been irrevocably altered by time and circumstances. Can these two overcome the obstacles? Will Jade ever live a normal life again?

"It doesn’t take long for everything we think we are, no matter how deeply grounded, to be rooted up and cut away. It doesn’t take long to lose yourself in such a way you almost find yourself hoping you’ll never be found. All it takes is one week."

This story was so hauntingly beautiful. The ending left me wanting more of these two broken people, who together, have found a way to move forward.

HASH(0x9dbe97f8) out of 5 stars Survivors March 10 2016

To read this book you will need a box of tissues and someone you love to hold you tight.
Jade Childs is a survivor. After ten years of captivity she must learn how to build a new life, without causing more anguish to the people who love her. Torrin Costigan has spent years trying to find the woman he loves, all while the people around him are telling him to move on. His life has changed dramatically while she has been missing. What is left to him may not be enough.
This is a difficult read because we have all seen on our television screens that this has happened. For those of us it has not touched it looks finished when the captives are found, but it's not and may never be for those involved.
A fascinating book that will keep your mind spinning.

HASH(0x9dbe9bb8) out of 5 stars Tragically beautiful!! March 15 2016

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I am honestly blown away by this book!! Nicole Williams possesses a rare gift of writing amazing characters and a true talent in telling their stories. She writes characters you can relate to, you can be friends with and you can potentially be. Their stories a raw, real and leave you wanting more.

In COLLARED we meet Jade and Torrin. On what should be one of the happiest days of Jades life, the unthinkable happens. At 17 years old Jade disappears. Torrin, the boy who loves her never gives up hope and never stops looking for her. 10 years later Jade comes home. Torrin has moved on the only way he knew how. Can their love survive? Can they still be friends?

Torrin is doing his best to help Jade but not everyone is convinced he is actually helping her. Can he help her adjust to her new normal or will he push her further into the darkness?

This book is tragically beautiful and I wish I could give it more than 5 stars! Nicole Williams has done a wonderful job developing the story and characters. I laughed at times and cried at others. Two thumbs up for COLLARED!!

HASH(0x9dbe9c9c) out of 5 stars 3 Sweet Stars March 22 2016
By AB ❤ I Love Book Love Blog - Published on
Format: Paperback
I liked this book, it was a good book, but I was not happy AT ALL with the outcome, and I wish it had ended differently.

Jade and Torrin are childhood sweethearts, they are young and in love and share a special bond that only the lucky few are able to experience at the tender age of seventeen.

"I'll never finish falling in love with you."

Life is perfect, until one fateful day when Jade is taken from her friends and family and everything she knows, and after months of living in the dark she comes to the realisation that if she is to get through day by day with her sanity intact, she must push her old life out of her mind and forget she was that girl, and become someone entirely different.

When she is rescued ten years later, she has a hard time adjusting back, but Torrin is the one constant that she needs to help her through it. The only problem is, she knows she can never be with him again the way she was before.

I really enjoyed Jade's journey, and her adjustment and growth after her time spent in captivity. She was a really strong character and I felt so much for her, especially when she finds out that Torrin can never really be hers again.

I think my main disconnect was that the hero and heroine felt more like friends than potential lovers, and the complete lack of any intimacy really was missed on my part. Also, I didn't feel satisfied with the ending, I would have preferred more closure.

I loved the premise of the story, I loved the way they loved each other, and I loved the writing, but ultimately I didn't love the last 30% of the book.

Recommended if you enjoy a clean romance, with a committed and swoony hero.

Collared is a forbidden romance, told in Jade's POV
