Fast forward to today and weeks of correspondence with California Umbrella. I spoke to a nice lady named Ivonne but unfortunately her superiors aren't the sharpest tools in the shed. After reviewing the photos that I provided to her, her supervisors decided that the OUTDOOR umbrella cannot be replaced under warranty because the wind caused it to break.
Wow, how convenient for them! That's like saying a broken chair cannot be returned because my weight caused the leg to bend!!
Ivonne (their customer representative) wrote, - "Thank you very much for the pictures you sent me. I have reviewed these pictures with my supervisor and unfortunately it looks like your umbrella was bent due to wind damage. Our company policy does not cover any wind damage. This is not a manufacture condition that falls under our company policy.
We do apologies for any inconvenience, you might want to contact Amazon for a replacement."
I am sure such a rejection is standard practice from their company. I find their answer to the problem very disingenuous. After all, unless there was some intent to break the umbrella from my part, I can't imagine any other way an OUTDOOR umbrella would break but by WIND!
Every OUTDOOR umbrella is exposed to some degree of wind and every OUTDOOR umbrella should be able to sustain normal wear and tare without bending in such short time. A few months of normal summer weather should not cause an umbrella's pole to bend. There was no hurricane; no tornado; nor any extreme windy condition that would cause such damage to the degree your alluding to.
If a company does not value its reputation or thinks the average consumer is a fool then shame on them.
The fabric is wonderful
Customer service was disingenuous
Their warranty is a false protection . . . I'm contemplating contacting the attorney general for fraudulent practices
Very expensive for the quality (be prepared for a short term rental)
In short - do NOT buy this OUTDOOR umbrella if you intend to display it outside!
i expect a lot from a nearly $500 umbrella. the 11 year-old one from a local patio store might be a stretch..or an indicator of quality manufacturing..... but more than 1 year ..absolutely..... this California Umbrella is the newest and most poorly constructed of the bunch.
the connection points that join the tilt mechanism to the main post have failed. had to remove the umbrella from the table to get it to close (that only caused a few arguments in this 30-year marriage). see photo where screwdriver is pointing.... that 1/2" of sleeve with the ribbing should not be showing. see that tiny indentation on the main bronze pole ... that's what they think will hold a $500 umbrella together. due to this poor quality manufacturing process the top of the umbrella won't stay up. ... oh and note those plastic armature points -cheaply made all around.
The terracotta Sunbrella fabric is very nice. In my photos, please note that I did not have the umbrella cranked all the way open. One thing that I love about the umbrella is how you just twist the collar of the umbrella to make it tilt. It is wonderful to not worry about breaking a fingernail trying to push in a tilt button. I have noticed that the price on this umbrella can vary a lot by color or by time of the year. I was very lucky to get mine for around $280 when I bought it over a year ago. If you aren't in a rush, you may be able to keep an eye on the item and get it at a good price if you are flexible with your colors or timing.
