I really liked Callaghen for the most part. It's one of L'Amour's very typical stories that become very predictable after reading five or six. But it had a strong hero, which L'Amour was famous for, and I guess that's why so many people like to read his stuff. The guy I really like, that I kept comparing L'Amour's writing to while I read Callaghen, is a guy named Kirby Jonas, who critics are calling The New Louis L'Amour. I can see why they call him that, but even though I like L'Amour, Jonas's writing is much better and more authentic. He, too, scouts out the places in his books. He keeps them clean, too. Reading Callaghen, I feel like it's a book that was kind of L'Amour's staple, and Kirby Jonas has perfected this kind of book with similarly strong heroes but more believable. If you like Callaghen, give Kirby Jonas a try, too.

There was plenty of action but it was repetitive. The cast of characters one dimensional. The supposed romance without any heat. Not one of louis l'amour's best.
Most all louis LaMour books are great

I have read almost every Louis LaMour book written. Most of them more than once. I love the fact that there is no cursing, foul language, immoral situations, or glorifying bad behavior. The stories are exciting, easily visualized, and one can place himself in the situations described. I have read lots of westerns, an era I admire, but Louis LaMour is the best of the best.
A Good Read

Couldn’t put it down until I turned the last page. I thought that I had read all of the Louis L’Amour books but I had missed this one.
We readers go back to the time when Mr. L'Amour was learning his craft as a writer

Here is your chance to read a L'Amour Western story written before he became a polished writer. You read a story that shows the promise of the writer he would become, and see that even the most talented writer has to have that talent sharpened. A good story that he re-wrote as a better one later on.
Usual L"Amour caliber.

In my opinion, Louis L'A mour is the comsumate in what ever he writes about. He always does extensive research and includes enough descriptive details to enable the reader to visualize the location and the characters. I have never read a book by him that I didn't enjoy.
