Product Description

A children's ghost story comes to terrifying life in this gut-wrenching thriller about a graduate student whose research into modern folklore summons the spirit of the dead. Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) laughs when she interviews college freshmen about their superstitions. But when she hears about Candyman, a slave spirit with a hook hand who is said to haunt Chicago's notorious Cabrini-Green housing project, she thinks she has a new twist for this thesis. Braving the gang-ridden territory to visit the site of a brutal murder, Helen arrogantly assumes Candyman can't really exist... until he appears, igniting a string of terrifying, tragic slayings. But the police don't believe in monsters, and they charge Helen with the grisly crimes. Only one person can set her free: CANDYMAN.

Grad student Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen), unwittingly ventures in to a world of murder and the occult as she tries to unravel the mystery of a folk legend, Candyman, for a thesis on urban legends. Lyle’s investigation leads her to an infamous Chicago housing project, Cabrini-Green, where this ghostly legend seems to be working its eerie spell on its residents. But is Candyman real or just a fairy tale made up to scare the believers and to explain the horrific murders plaguing Cabrini-Green? Why does death befall anyone who whispers the word, … his name …five times while looking in a mirror- Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman… CANDYMAN?

Born from the mind of Clive Barker, based on his short story “The Forbidden” and directed by Bernard Rose, this twisted little gem of a horror film didn’t impress me that much when I viewed it in the movie theatres over 2 decades ago. But then again, I was a teenager and in my juvenile mind, I wanted to see more of the usual- a mindless slasher film with a high body count, some throwaway characters and maybe throw in some gratuitous nudity while you’re at it. “Candyman” was to my surprise, not this type of horror movie. Repeated viewings made me realize just how well made this film is. It is mysterious, it is haunting, it is filled with wonderment; it creates a hypnotic world of violence, mysticism and despair and lets us get close emotionally to its leading lady and its killer. Who is this elusive Candyman and what does he want with Helen? The answer is obvious but is it really? Virginia Madsen is beautiful and her performance here is very under-rated.

Black Freddy Kruegar or Candyman as he is better known is one of the greatest horror icons to come out of the 90's, which according to many was a bad decade for horror in terms of originality. I compare it to Nightmare not because it is not its own story, more because of some strong similarities leading Nightmare on Elm Street to be the most similar franchise. You have a villain that literally gets inside your head and kills you eventually. Not to mention the small detail that Freddy and Candyman both get torched at some point. We have a young journalist trying to get the story on Candyman in what would be called a project or ghetto. That is different from NOES. Freddy has a nursery rhyme, Candyman has a rumour about saying his name in front of a mirror. Overall, it delivers on the kills and thrills.

as horror movies go,this one is pretty good.it's from the imagination
of Clive Barker.it's basically a movie about an urban legend involving
the title character, and one woman's research into urban legends and
folklore.without giving anything away, she gets way more than she
bargained for.The character of Candyman is certainly creepy, and the
movie has a very good atmosphere.the acting is good and Tony Todd is
terrific in the title role.there are some real eerie moments.the one
thing i didn't like was i thought the violence was too excessive.the
movie is not groundbreaking or anything, but still,i enjoyed it.i don't
think it as good as another Clive Barker creation,Hellraiser, which i
thought was groundbreaking.for me,Candy man is a 4/5

This by far has to be the scariest horror movie of all times. As a child i have to say the Friday the 13th movies were scary, along wit Mike Myers, Chucky, Freddy, and the rest but this movie goes beyond all that. I think if u want to see a good horror movie on a Friday night then this is the one. You will definitely be scared. The only thing is that you shouldnt watch it alot of times, the more u watch, the less scarier it becomes.. a must movie to own.
