This 3-book set runs the gamut. The first book feels more like a "get started canning" pamphlet. It lists some reasons to can, tells you to look up information on line, and then includes 12 very basic recipes (the tomato sauce involves tomatoes, salt, and seasonings of your choice...). There are some typos, the recipes are inconsistent, there isn't any information on how to actual can anything or what things like head space mean, nor is there any discussion on safety. The recipes are inconsistent, and as a not-even-beginner, I don't know if this is intentional or accidental. This book would probably get 1-2 stars.

The second book is much more robust. It contains a solid discussion of safety and talks about the different methods of canning. It stresses the importance of choosing the right type of canning (water bath vs pressure cooker) but doesn't really tell you how to figure out which type to use on your own. Should I be testing the pH of my food before I start canning? No idea. This also gives a nice overview of the materials I'll need. There may be a step-by-step walk through of how to can something in here, but it wasn't clear to me. There are some recipes, though no pictures. I'd give this book 4 stars.

The third book was interesting- it explains kind of basic recipes without getting into much detail. Here's the approach you would take to make jam. Here's how you might can meat. So this might be a bit difficult if you're looking for an actual recipe rather than general ideas. I'd give this book 3-4 stars.

I'm not sure who this book is really aimed at. The first book seems designed to convince you to start canning but simply doesn't provide enough information to get it done. The second book is a great improvement aimed at someone with at least a bit of canning experience. The third book assumes you are comfortable cooking and happy to make up your own recipes once given a basic structure.

I received this product at a reduced price in exchange for an honest review.

This is a great little guide (set of books) for canning and preserving. It seems to offer the whole outlook on canning from beginning to end. This books starts off by giving a break down of everything about canning. It started by giving reasons it is good to can at home versus buying canned goods. This talks about saving money, shelf life changes, convenience, etc. The author also talks about the self rewards of creating food for you and your family.

One thing I have found on my health journey is just making your own food. Food made at home is just so much more healthy for you because they are all natural ingredients (and a few items that you mix in). You can cut out preservatives, chemicals, and other items by making and eating your own homemade food.

Anyway, back to this. The second book gets into the safety of canning. It talks about the importance of being safe with your canning food, and explains some different forms of cleaning your utensils for canning, and the whole canning processes.

The third contains more information on actual recipes and such, but isn’t really that detailed. It does give some basics on recipes.

All in all, it’s pretty good, but seemed to lack some detail or really go in depth. I had to do some extra research to figure out which type of canning would be good for me, and where I needed to start, but, this does seem to be a good basic guide to follow once you get into it a little bit.

Also, I did receive this book for free for an honest review (which this is completely honest). However, the code I was given didn’t work, so the seller actually sent this to me out of Amazon, just through email, so I don’t know if it will show up as a verified purchase or not since I only downloaded the sample through Amazon.

I am really glad I ordered this set of books on my kindle. I've been wanting to be able to can foods for a long time as I miss my grandmother's canned tomatoes and I am so pleased that I feel like I might be able to give it a go and not completely fail. I like that this gives detail as to what tools I need to purchase and how to do everything. It goes into good detail and has good recipes.
I was a little worried after I finished the first booklet as I still hadn't really learned exactly how to can but I discovered that I had the rest of the booklets and they tell the rest of the story and give you the information you need to be able to can stuff and do a good job. I got this download for free and this is my honest opinion of the book. Overall, a good read. For someone like me who has no idea how to can, this book is very helpful to get me going in a good direction. I would recommend this book for beginners.

I especially enjoyed the apple butter and the jalepeno jelly recipe. I will be making these as soon as I can get back into my garden when this snow thaws!
