Smart AUTO for the PowerShot SX270 HS has been significantly expanded, making it easier than ever to capture the sharp, bright, colorful images - and videos - you're looking for. By assessing various factors in both the background and the subject, the system recognizes 58 predefined shooting situations and automatically selects the camera settings that will yield the best possible results. Simply frame the shot you want, and in dozens of common or challenging scenarios the camera takes care of the rest.
\n\nFace ID on the PowerShot SX270 HS gives you an easy way to improve every shot of the people you love. Simply take a picture of up to 12 faces you would like the camera to register, then enter names and ages. Once a person is registered, the camera will pick him or her out of a group (even against a busy background) and adjust focus and exposure to his or her face, even recognizing faces in profile. Face ID is particularly great for shots of babies and children. The system can pick your baby out of a group of children, focus on your baby when pictured with an adult, and capture the best smile by taking three successive images when the smile is detected.
\n\nNew Hybrid Auto on the PowerShot SX270 HS brings enhanced image quality to the popular Movie Digest feature on PowerShot digital cameras. Movie Digest records up to four seconds of video every time you shoot a still image, then automatically joins the clips into a video that captures the essence of special days: vacations, important occasions, any time you're shooting many shots in a day.
\n\nIt's easy to capture clear, steady images with the PowerShot SX270 HS, even in low light without using a tripod. That's because the camera is equipped with Canon's innovative Intelligent IS.

I have not used it much yet but it has fully met my expectations allowing me to do a lot of settings in order to get special effects. I am still exploring it but so far I am very happy with the choice.
One question - would the SX280 version with the wifi and gps been worth the difference? would I have even really used them? So far I think the 270 was a good choice for me.

I've been using this device for about a week now, and have used and compared various models in the weeks leading up to my purchase. So far I am very happy with the device itself, but think that Canon cut corners to make this a budget camera with high end specs.

Pros: This is a fantastic little device. Crisp shots, nice zoom, image stabilization works incredibly well. The price on Amazon cannot be beat. The camera body is very sturdy and the screen is large and clear and functions exactly as I'd expect for a simple point and shoot. If you don't care about WiFi photo copying and GPS tagging it isn't worth upgrading to the 280 HS as the sensors and build are otherwise identical between the two devices.

Cons: Some reviews I sifted through noted that the camera does not perform all that well in darkened inside scenarios and darkens rather quickly when zooming in low light situations. This is definitely the case with this camera, but it performs quite well in normal lighting and outdoors scenarios. The auto-rising flash is also a bit irritating if you like to hold your camera with two hands. There is no HDMI or USB cable included in the box, only the battery, charger and wrist strap which is a bit of a nuisance, especially in this price range.

My husband and I we both love this camera. Very clear pictures and the 20x optical zoom was a major deciding factor in buying this and that worked great. Small enough to take anywhere and powerful enough to zoom in. Great buy.

Had it for a year or so, Still looking for the sweet spot on it though.
Great HD videos with sound. Portrait mode has great built-in color adjustments.Very fast rapid shoot - but without flash only. Zoom is very good - detail is comparable to new T3 with 250mm zoom, but jpeg compression tends to leave a lot of artifacts (and there's no RAW option).

Bad red-eye problem. Flash location is really inconvenient, right under a finger usually. EATS batteries, especially using digest function and probably rapid. Tends to go to slower shutter speed instead of using a higher ISO, so I get too many blurred pix (kids will be kids and move a lot - SPORTS option is used a lot)

Wish it had a hot shoe, remote shutter port, faster focus (especially under lower light conditions), less red-eye.

I bought this camera at the end of 2013 and was extremely pleased with all the features, ease of use, etc. I found the battery lifespan to be on the short side, but had purchased a back-up battery, so wasn't too bothered. A year later and I am pretty discouraged and disappointed with this camera. While I still like this camera in principle (with a few gripes on the location of some of the features i.e. flash), there is definitely something wonky going on with how this camera handles a fully-charged battery. It appears as if it doesn't recognize that the battery is charged and shuts down after a few snaps of the camera. It's gotten so ridiculous that I've pretty much decided to throw all $230 of it out.

I am a loyal Amazon.ca customer and have been truly let down by a product sold by Amazon.ca. In fact, I'm so unhappy that I recommend that you purchase another camera altogether and preferably elsewhere.

It would be great camera but the power consumption is overwhelming in video mode. All SX270HS
units have the problem. Canon never fixed it, and if you try to have it fixed under warranty (at least in Canada),
they will send you a refurbished unit that exhibits the same problem, but may have some scratches etc (hit and miss).
You complain again, they send you another refurbished one until you give up.
Shame on Canon. Stay away from this model.
I did not purchase it from Amazon, but could not resist to put my 2 cents. It is better when taking only pictures but not as
good as its predecessor SX230, which has inferior specs.

I love the 20X zoom and the fact that the camera is still small enough to carry with me wherever I go. I've taken some shots that I wouldn't even have considered with my last camera. The only thing that is even a slight irritation is the flash that sometimes catches me off guard and pops up under my finger, but I'm getting used to holding it in a different way now. I've experienced some difficulty in focusing close up sometimes and I'm not sure if it's me or the camera. Apart from that I feel there are more positives that negatives and I'm enjoying my camera and the quality of pictures it takes.
