The optical quality on this lens is really great, as is the large aperture. I use it for its "fast" properties for taking IR and night photography, and combined with a macro tube extender, it's great for macro photography too. The main thing to be aware of is (beginner mistake) this is a 50mm full frame lens, so if you have an APS-C camera body (like R50 or whatever) the focal width is going to be more like an 85mm fixed lens, always zoomed in. The focus motor inside is... noisy, though. Maybe not great for video. Also no OIS, so beware the handshake.
