Daryl Hall's "Can't Stop Dreaming" is seeing a reprieve as a 'new' release in 2003. There are no changes in any of the songs from the original but one of the songs "Something About You" now appears on the superb Hall & Oates set "Do It For Love" which I also recommend.
The production here is simple but solid. Not a lot of high energy here, but plenty of strength. (If you want high energy from this master songsmith, get "Three Hearts In The Happy Ending Machine" - by far Daryl Hall's best.
The vocals are the best in the business as always. The surprise was hearing "Cab Driver" with that killer sax intro becoming a screaming hit on the Smooth Jazz charts along with it's follow-up, Daryl's version of "She's Gone", done with simplistic raw excellence. They should be hits on A/C as well, along with the title track "Can't Stop Dreaming".

Michael McDonald is an excellent blue-eyed soul singer but Daryl is the real deal!!! "I Can't Stop Playing" this wonderous collection of hynotic vocals which illustrate blue-eyed soul singing at it's very finest!! Every song here is a total knock-out that will stir your emotions and satisfy your soul and make you wonder what is wrong with the radio programmers in this country today!!! Hello!!!!!!!!! From the flowing rhythm to the loose vocal that is all over the map with such ease in the opener "Can't Stop Dreaming", you know that you are in store for a completely extraordinary experience that is as good as it gets!! A soulful sax intro into "Let Me Be The One" leads you into a totally hynotic smooth vocal by Daryl that comes from deep inside and you soon realize that this guy is really comparable to the greatness of a Marvin Gaye yet has not been given his just due!! "Something About You" is a soothing love song that is soft and tender with great guitar work complimenting Daryl's ethereal vocal. Get ready for the ride of your life in "Cab Driver" which is dark and jazzy and simply a classic which would be a huge hit if heard at all!!! Daryl's voice will blow you away in this one as it will in the driving rhythm number "Never Let Me Go". Daryl's extraordinary vocal on "Holding Out For Love" is at its most gorgeous and this is a soul-deep performance!! To think that Daryl also wrote all of these classic songs in addition to having such a great flexable voice makes this great set even more amazing and incredible that "Grammy" is not connected to this solid classic!! HELLO GRAMMY!!!-Are you in outer space??? This original classic exceeds Michael's "Motown" in every way imaginable but that is not meant to put down "Motown" as it is an enjoyable work but come on!!!!Read more ›

For those of you who are big Hall & Oates fans and have also enjoyed some Daryl Hall's previous efforts, this is THE solo release that finally brings together a cohesive solo set that is as good as anything released this year. What is even more surprising to me is that "Can't Stop Dreaming" was initially released in Japan in 1999, and is only making its way to the U.S. AT LEAST 4 years after it was recorded. I assume that the relative "resurgence" of Hall & Oates, finally prompted the record company to put it out.
Marketing considerations aside, the combination of great songs and a voice that sounds better than it ever has, makes this release one that just keeps growing on me more and more everytime that I listen to it. I have bought every single Daryl Hall solo release and while there have been some gems to be found in each of them, they all lacked the elements to make them must have recordings.
This release just jumps at you and don't for one second think of it as "adult contemporary" as that is what singers of a certain age or Celine-like syrup wind up being identified as. This is as contemporary as anything out there and if I had to qualify it it would be pop/soul that could appeal even to all, including those who bought Justin Timberlake's solo release or Daniel Bedingfield's "Gotta Get Though This". I make this point only because this release is so good that I would like it to receive the right push so that Daryl can keep chugging along. I don't think that ther record company will do much to tell folks out there that this release is out and that it rocks. So I am do it for them in my own way and hoping that enough of you who would like great music with smooth hooks, tight love songs, and crisp arrangements give this a shot.
