A child's imaginative journey on his pirate ship with his four trusty companions. Reviews for Captain No Beard "Roman charms with an imaginative, whimsical picture book that will entertain even the oldest pirates." - Kirkus "My kids loved shouting “Shiver Me Timbers” and “Swab the Deck” along with the crew. The story of Captain No Beard and his crew is exciting, engaging and lots of fun! The bold, colorful pictures enhance the experience of the pirate adventure that Roman takes you on from the moment you begin reading until the very end of the story." - sippycupmom.com "The illustration in the book is just as fun with vibrant colors, lovable characters and a world of imagination. It’s easy for kiddos to engage their imagination and become part of this fun story from beginning to end." - mommysmemorandum.com "lovely intonation when read aloud, and the simple, understandable story also carries a more complex, clever subtext that will allow for educational discussions; hilarious and a pleasant opportunity to teach children about the nuances of words and their layers of meaning; the characters take great delight upon using the phrases correctly; children will, too." - Kirkus

What do you get when you take 19 eye patches and bandannas, 2 pirate hats, a dragon, a parrot, a lion, a monkey and a frog to a classroom full of Kindergarteners?

You get the makings for a sea worthy fun time aboard the "Flying Dragon"!

Last week I had the opportunity to read "Captain No Beard An Imaginary Tale of a Pirates Life" by Carole P Roman to my daughters Kindergarten class. The kids sat in awe aboard our pretend pirate ship as I told the story of Captain No Beard and his crew.

Captain No Beard and his trusty crew set sail aboard their mighty ship, the "Flying Dragon". When a rumbling storm rolls in the can the Captain keep his crew safe? What will happen when they hear a mysterious voice from the bottom of the sea? Will Captain No Beard and his crew find the treasure from the sea?

This was a fantastically fun book to read. It captured the children's imagination and mine! It was impossible not to feel the fun and excitement in the book. The illustrations are creative and fun. The font is whimsical and adds to the whole feel of the book, while still being easily read. I knew as soon as I read it that I had to read it to the class. They loved it as much as I did.

As I read it aloud the kids began to read along with me. "Shiver me timbers!" they would yell right along with me. They would sigh and say with me, "Being a captain is hard work." Suited for both boys and girls, this book was engaging and kept a group of 5 and 6 year old captivated the entire time it was read. When I finished the kids wanted to read more, but sadly it was the end of the school day and we had to go home.

My son and I read and reviewed this book for Mother Daughter Book Reviews. Here are our thoughts:

SON SAYS:

This story is about a pirate who wants to get treasure. He sails on his boat with Mongo the Monkey, Linus the Lion, Fribbit the Frog, and Hallie the first mate looking for adventure. The cover and the pictures in the book were good – I liked them. My favorite picture is the first one in the book when it has all of the crew together. In that picture though, the monkey has a really big head and a tiny body. They should change it. My favorite part of the book is when Hallie almost falls overboard and Fribbit kept saying all the wrong things and changing what he was saying, like “Man – I mean – girl overboard” and at the end when he says “…overboard! I mean almost overboard!” That was a funny part. I liked the surprise of who the mermaid was at the end. I liked this book and I think boys and girls 10 and under would like this book.

MOM SAYS:

Captain No Beard and his motley crew of sailors head off on an adventure on the high seas aboard his mighty frigate, The Flying Dragon. But as the crew is wondering what it is sailors do aboard ships, and as they encounter stormy weather and a mysterious mermaid, he soon discovers that “Being a captain is hard work.”

Captain No Beard: An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate’s Life is an amusing picture book that puts the reader in the minds of a young boy and girl who pretend they are sailing the seas aboard a pirate ship. The story is filled with fun pirate quips such as “shiver me timbers!”, “batten down the hatches”, “sail ho”, “Davy Jones’s locker” and more. There are plenty of opportunities to adopt different accents and voices for each of the characters. It was a fun book to read aloud!

Pretending to be a pirate is something that nearly all children do at some time in their life. The lure of sailing the seven seas in search of booty and treasure is a powerful one; it can be seen in the movies, amusement parks, books and commercials for cereals.
This book is about one such adventure embarked upon by Captain No Beard (Alexander) and his First Mate Hallie. Accompanied by a loyal crew of animals, they sail their ship through a storm and the near loss of the First Mate falling overboard. Eventually, they manage to encounter a creature of the seas that willingly gives up her treasure.
Very entertaining, this book about a common adventure is itself uncommon. It will delight any child lucky enough to encounter it.

I enjoyed reading about Captain No Beard, Mongo the Monkey, Linus the Lion, Fribbit the Frog, the Captain's First Mate, his cousin Hallie and of course his ship, the famous Flying Dragon.
In this first book of the series, a bad storm is on the way so all the crew have to work hard to survive it, but the adventure doesn't end there - they hear a voice coming from below!
Beautifully presented with great colour drawings.
Recommended for boys AND girls.
