Good story

I simply can't get enough of this series! Smith blasts readers off of earth with the same flash, flare and energy that we've come to know and love her for. This action packed novel balances romance with adventure in a manner that kept me on my toes. I like how the plot backtracks a bit from where the previous novel ended, giving us Cara's view of how things started and taking off from there. The plot was seamlessly crafted, always headed towards an end goal without ever being predictable.
Cara is completely, perfectly, over the top priceless. I love the way that Smith introduces readers to and develops Cara's character. I could feel her energy pouring from the pages. Trelon's frustration and adoration shine along with it. The culture clash between these two does as much to develop their characters as Smith's fantastically intricate character development does.
Exotic & erotic. That's how I'd definitely describe this novel. Smith takes SciFi romance to a whole new galaxy with this one.

I am not a fan of Cara. I didn’t find her spunky and independent, I thought she was obnoxious, selfish, spiteful, and cruel. The ‘tricks’ she plays felt too much like a quintessential mean-girl for me to be amused by them. The political intrigue interests me enough to check out the next book, I’m very interested in seeing where that storyline takes us.

Whiplash in some 300 odd pages.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 11, 2016Verified Purchase
Having left mixed reviews on the previous book, I would have to largely agree that the major downfalls are still present in the second book for me. I've given it 4 stars because I did actually enjoy the book but, as the title would suggest, it frequently gives me whiplash from the style of writing, the character interactions and the generally erratic plot line. I like our female lead (Cara) who is the essence of insanity in small, female form but like the book emphasises, she is certainly best in small doses. Like in book one, I find the sudden infatuation with seemingly innocuous gold (the symbiot to informed readers) are taken as being alive right from the start with no reason other than a 'feeling'. I half wonder if I've been doing things wrong for most of my life and should start speaking to the next piece of gold jewellery I see on someone I barely know... Anyway, moving on. I am also a fan of our male lead (Trelon) who is quite an endearing mate with quirks and good humorous inner monologue (if somewhat repetitive) about his love-hate relationship with Cara. Their interactions can range from very amusing at the constant mini-battles they seem to engage in with each other, Cara seeks to rile him as much as possible, to annoyingly unstable with the on-off-on-off relationship ups and downs. It certainly seems the realms of impossibility are slim with Cara who appears to defy every odd going and be quite a remarkably talented character - I get that this was the point but sometimes I am more inclined to warm to a character who has some flaws as well as strengths. Skilled lock picker, escape artist, general whiz with ALL (even unfamiliar) technology and programs, hacker... the list goes on. I would have loved to see a genuine task in which she didn't seem to outshine her female companions or Trelon.
The writing style has not really changed much between books which was one of the things I was hoping to see. It's not a bad style so much as a changeable one, with some fabulously well written sections and humorous comments that made me smile while others were, again, quite dramatised and bordering on childish. This wasn't always the case, otherwise the book would have been out the window pretty quickly but sometimes I just did despair a little of how quite interesting parts were reduced to flick-through material to move on hastily. This might be attributed to, like the prequel (Abducting Abby), we jump from scene to scene with new problems cropping up one after the other. To a certain extent because you know what happens with Abby and Zoran in book 1, half of book 2 is just the same stuff from a different angle and is just playing catch up to get to their own unique parts. This could make it interesting by the time we get to book four/five when the progression from Abby, Cara, Trisha will probably be condensed into a rushed portion of the book - a fatal downfall to introducing five female characters for five males at exactly the same time.
Since I've focussed heavily on the negative parts it is only fitting to say that I really do like some of the things that go down between Cara and Trelon even though things escalate quite quickly. I like how we get to see more of their world and learn of the Valdier culture, citizens and their tenuous relationships with the other alien species. I still believe the whole principles of the Valdier species, their Symbiots, technology etc is extremely clever and creative. The descriptive quality of the book is really good in places where it really counts, the author does a good job of throwing in character attributes and appearances and I was relieved that the concept of the symbiots and dragon shifters as a whole was more thoroughly covered; the first book in the series did leave the reader having to go along with some things that weren't quite sufficiently explained.
So, 4/5 starts, quite generous in some places and deserved in others. Still planning on reading the other books, with a little bit of dubiousness but I'm also quite eager to get down to learning more about the characters, the Valdier and the world of dragon shifters!

An excellent sequal

I disagree with the other British reviewer in that I could totally understand Cara's behaviour as she has a serious case of ADHD combined with a genius IQ: This is bound to lead to trouble plus it's a fantasy for goodness sake!
I agree with one US reviewer regarding the grammatical and other errors.. Susan still has a problem with tenses and where to put "too"and "to" plus redundant commas. This, at least, makes a change from the redundant apostrophe we normally see in books. I do not agree with her view of the rest of the book, however and love strong alien, alpha males who immediately know their mate when they see or possibly smell her. If only it were true!
I really enjoyed this book and will be reading the rest of the series as, despite the avoidable errors, I love Susan Smith's writing as she does not simply write a book full of sex but builds up her characters well and expands her plots with plenty of action and judicious amounts of loving.
Highly recommended.

I found this author by accident, my current bank account might regret my find, but i totally don't. i'm going to give a broad review here. as i'm going to add this review to every book of S E Smith i have ever bought, I've got them all now. every book of hers i'm assuming here that S E Smith is a woman (it could be a man!) i read the dragon lords books first and went on from there, i'm only just getting around to putting up a review and because of the amount i books i'm just beginning to realize i had just bought, i don't have the time to write individual ones, i'm not a writer i'm a reader. lol
the fact that i preceded to spend the amount of money i spent on to buy all of her books, should tell you what i think of her/his writing. i just wish i had them all to read again for the first time. :)

Mischief and Adventure
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 11, 2016Verified Purchase
This is the second of nine books in this series. Apart from Abby who innocently is the trigger for the rest of the stories by helping an injured man on the top her mountain, she and the four women she meets end up on another world.
In turn, Cara, Tricia, Ariel and Carmen meet warriors whose attitudes annoy each character. The men are not used to independent women who teach them a few painful lessons. Lots of comedy moments as well as kidnappings before all issues are resolved. Can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series. Highly recommended.

I don't usually read my books using my phone on the bus,but once I started this book I couldn't put it down, I was actually having a good belly laugh on the bus while reading, tears were rolling down my face from the laughter,I have read it now seven times and each time I find something more to appreciate about it. I have now got the whole series, including the spins off with the dragonlings (my favourite is the Easter dragonlings one ).Keep them coming S.E.Smith I do enjoy your imagination.
