It is difficult not to be overwhelmed by books advocating the need to act on Climate Change - and arguably for very good reason (though I question the carbon footprint of all these books!). With Bill Gates and Mike Berners-Lee (re-)publishing recently, there are some great books out there at the moment - and there are those which are less good...
I am happy to report that Neil's book falls firmly towards the former camp. As others have noted, there is a lack of specific references for those who want to follow-up on the author's ideas, but perhaps that is not the intent of the book? There is some signposting to further generic reading on the subject area, which may in turn lead to more specific references.
What Neil has successfully done here, is to span the wealth of areas in which our lives can impact the climate - with some practical suggestions as to what each of us can do. These are not presented in a "preachy" fashion, but rather as stimulating "food for thought" - a literary equivalent of the UK Government's Nudge Unit perhaps.
However, the book is rather text-heavy for the audience I think would most benefit from it; use of more illustrative charts and tables would help to make the book more readily digestible. There is also a wealth of examples from Scotland, betraying the author's location. Neil has incorporated other examples of good (and bad) practice from around the world, but the book could be improved by engineering some more geographical balance into it - notwithstanding Scotland is doing some great work in this field!
For passionate sustainability enthusiasts, this is definitely one to consider adding to your bookshelf - carbon footprint permitting!

Carbon Choices provides governments, businesses and consumers with common-sense solutions to tackle climate change and nature loss. I hope it will motivate you to change your behaviour, and perhaps campaign to change business activity and government policy.
"I greatly look forward to reading it", Sir David Attenborough
I am a Scottish geographer, former accountant and now work as an Energy and Water Specialist. Whilst I am not a climate scientist, every chapter has been verified by an experienced academic, business leader or climate specialist.
Section 1 describes and explains climate change and its impacts in a clear and concise manner.
Section 2 introduces ten building blocks that society needs to put in place to lay the foundations to enable us all to make better choices for the planet.
Section 3 applies these building blocks to our everyday lives - our diets, homes, travel, shopping and leisure – outlining a more optimistic, better future. By doing so we can rewild nature, improve our society, be healthier, happier and lead more fulfilled lives.
Carbon Choices concludes with a green action plan and a vegan recipe.
A summary and testimonials are available at www.carbonchoices.uk. I am donating one third of profits to rewilding projects.

Good overview but no references for further information
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 4, 2021Verified Purchase
This book is a good overview of the climate change problem and the solutions toolbox, He even thinks out of the box in some cases - like downsizing into 'right-size' homes or sharing homes to save resources. (Though I am not sure I agree that stamp duty is a major barrier to this). My main criticism is that he does not have any references anywhere, and does not use the sort of language that would allow one to follow up interesting ideas. For example he mentions some developments in waste water treatments that are intriguing, but there were no keywords in his text I could use to find them. Also his avoidance of numbers, while it makes for an easy read, does not always help one to grasp the relative significance of different issues.

A fantastic topical overview

As we struggle with the Pandemic and look to move forward to a sustainable "New Normal" this book looks at where we currently stand and gives pointers as to where we and our politicians should be making efforts to avoid Climate disaster. If those in positions of influence follow this guidance and apply the lessons to the Glasgow Climate talks there is hope for a viable future.

Must read guide on climate change for the non-specialist
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 11, 2020Verified Purchase
This book is a great introduction to the issue of climate change and presents the facts in an easy to understand way for the non-specialist reader. It also offers common sense ways to address the problem and reduce carbon emissions split between what governments, businesses and, most critically, all of us as individuals can do.
It's packed full of interesting practical example and personal anecdotes and insights that help understanding and make it an enjoyable read. Neil's passion for the subject and need for urgent action comes through strongly and we should all take notice before it's too late.

A clearly argued and compelling case for action
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 7, 2021Verified Purchase
An easily digestible book written in clear and unambiguous language that resonates on almost every page.
The reality of the climate challenge is tackled from a range of different angles and on each occasion the reader is left in no doubt about the need to act now. The inclusion of suggested action plans for government, business and the individual reduce the need for procrastination and further encourage the need for immediate response.
The book influenced me immediately, I am already recommending it to others and perhaps more importantly, using some of the content to influence my peers.
