You chose the greater sin

Written in 1893 this book is reflective of that period. It is actually three stories woven together in what is flowery language, a lot of which would be thought of as unnecessary in today's jargon (the father's will for instance). This is not about A cardinal's sin; it is about THE cardinal sin, in this case avarice. Louis' father "justifies" the penurious life which he chooses to inflict also upon Louis. He says living without luxury saves Louis from becoming a person with a wasted life and no real values. Perhaps. Louis certainly turns out well, but as the father is worth millions, it does seem that his strategy is harsh. There is a nice story thread which all comes together at the end. The book is about 125 pages, so the reader does not have a lot to digest. It is a fine look at France and noble characters.
