Product Description

The Carol Burnett Show is one of the most popular and beloved shows in the history of television and it is now available on DVD to all audiences for the very first time. Starting in 1967 and continuing for 11 straight years, The Carol Burnett Show was the ultimate variety show with music, acting, larger-than-life guest stars, and, of course, comedy... sketches, jokes and parodies that are as funny now as they were 40 years ago. All the episodes in the DVD collections were personally chosen by Carol, and all DVDs feature full, unedited episodes as they originally aired on television.

If you were around a television set in the 1960s and '70s, you were probably a fan of Carol Burnett, whose I'll-do-anything comedic attack made her the essential link between Lucille Ball and every comedienne who ever found success on Saturday Night Live, from Gilda Radner to Tina Fey. Burnett's variety show ran from 1967 to 1978 and produced 278 episodes, so this six-disc selection is only the tip of the iceberg. It's subtitled Carol's Favorites and features 16 episodes in full, lending a representative taste of the show's wacky vibe. Certain legendary sketches had to be included, including "Went with the Wind," a send-up of Gone with the Wind that had Carol making one of the great walk-on sight gags in the history of television. Among the other movie parodies, a spoof of the Airport series of airborne disaster pictures is especially good at skewering the clichés of the genre.

The guest stars are a collection of '70s TV faces: Dinah Shore, Roddy McDowall, Betty White, and Carol's favorites Jim Nabors and Ken Berry. A few are unexpected--Maggie Smith and Joanne Woodward, for instance--and there's a memorable appearance by the Jackson 5 during which a sketch is interrupted by a mild earthquake (the cameras keep running and Burnett ad-libs like a master). You'll also see some installments of "The Family," the ongoing sketch that, at its best, walked an interesting line between hilarity and quiet (or loud) desperation. The time-capsule aspects that really date the show are the famously crazy costumes by Bob Mackie and the old-school variety-show musical numbers, some of which have a sincerity that was already unfashionable by 1974--although it should be noted that a musical spoof of "Little Red Riding Hood," performed in Spanish by a supposed Mexican troupe, is a surreal exercise that predicts a later kind of conceptual comedy. Burnett's talents extend to her weekly improvs with the audience, and the comedy gold mined by Harvey Korman and Tim Conway remains glittering.

The extras include a good long (46 minutes!) interview with Korman and Conway riffing on each other; a couple of tributes/profiles of the show and Burnett that emphasize her status as a female comedy pioneer; a 35-minute cast reunion with Burnett, Conway, Vicki Lawrence, and Lyle Waggoner; brief (and randomly scattered) intros to certain episodes, with Burnett, Korman, and Conway; a full 33-minute episode of The Garry Moore Show, where Burnett came to prominence as a cast member; and other reminiscences. A 12-page booklet describes the set's episodes and sketches--especially useful because the shows here are not presented in chronological order. --Robert Horton

These are the exact same quality as the previously way over priced released ones (2002) from Columbia house & guthy renker & shopnorthern here in Canada, but these are affordable compared to the ones that were released before. As a huge fan i was thrilled that time life was releasing new Carol Burnett show dvds at a affordable price because i along with many other fans could not afford the ones that were previously released. I purchased the time life 22 discs 50 episodes box set at a cost of $200.00 which is a big deal compared to the other previously released ones. This 6 dvds set has 16 full uncut episodes of some of the best shows, about 50 minutes each. FANS WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED,unless you require captions which these dvds do not have. I guess at this point in time these will be the best quality releases we will ever see of the Carol Burnett show, SO ENJOY THE QUEEN OF COMEDY & HER FANTASTIC CAST OF REGULARS.

WARNING: Be very careful from who & where you buy the Carol Burnett show dvds, many online crooks are selling cheap DEFECTIVE! bootleg/counterfeit dvds of this show, several on EBAY & IOFFER.

I love the show but I do have issues with the DVD collection. The case arrived damaged. So far the DVDs are playing. But, the case tells me that there are seven DVDs to this set. The booklet inside show the episodes for seven DVDs. But the set only comes with six. I don't understand why the packaging states there are seven when there are only six. And one of the episodes on the seventh DVD starring Tommy Smothers, I wanted to see! Furthermore, on the fourth DVD, Carol gives an intro to one of the episodes. It was the one where a horse in the background decided to take care of business while Carol was singing. I remembered see that at the time, so I looked forward to re-visiting it. Except the episode played and that scene was not in it! What a rip off! Why tell us about it but then not show it. A disappointment!

I've become so tired of the kind of thing that passes for comedy these days and was wishing that there would be re-runs of shows like those of the Carol Burnett show on TV. The wish was granted and I couldn't be more pleased. Many thanks and yes, I am more than willing to recommend the DVD set.

By the way, your price was much better than the TV offer too!

If you watched The Carol Burnett Show when it was on TV this is a great review of the best of their shows. We watched these 6 DVD's in 10 days & I think my ribs are still a bit sore. The best part is listening them talk about their experiences on & off the show. Just starting watching "This Time Together" yesterday,

I'm hoping John Byner's routine with Donald Duck which is talked about is on Carol's Favourites. If not another DVD set along with out takes would be worth purchasing if it comes available.

If by some way you're a teenager & your parents haven't introduced you to this show first off file abuse charges against them then spend the money to buy this, you won't be sorry.

With each dvd having 3 episodes with bonus feature or 4 episodes with bonus features. But if you buy the complete set of 22 dvds set and get 50 episodes that's still less episodes than columbia house which released 31 dvds with 2 episodes on each disc for 62 episodes total. 50 episodes still less than 62. Time-life is still a better buy than the columbia house or guthy renker which the volumes have same episodes but different art work. But I wish they would put bonus features on separate dvds from the episodes and put 4 episodes on each dvd than doesn't have bonus features. That way for people that just want the episodes and not the bonus feature can buy the episodes alone.

They just don't make shows like the Carol Burnett Show any more. SNL is the closest show out there, but, the camaraderie of the ensemble cast in the Carol Burnett Show cannot be matched today.
