About the Author

Sue Maynard was born and raised in the rural Canadian village of Creemore, ON (yes, like the beer), but currently hangs her hat in the much bigger metropolis of She is a proud Browncoat, a horror geek girl, and an overall sci fi nerd. In addition to writing, Sue is a total freak for movies, books, video games, comicons, llamas, paperdolls, shiny things, Coke Zero, and her cat. Carving the Light is Sue's first novel, originally written for the 2009 NaNoWriMo challenge, which marked both her first year as a NaNo participant, and her first recorded 'win'. It also holds the dubious distinction of being the first project of this magnitude that Sue has ever managed to actually complete, as she has not always been the biggest fan of finishing what she starts. Sue has, however, been known to step into a room and immediately map out her escape plan in the case of a zombie attack. So maybe she's just been conserving her energy for that.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sisters, Connected or Not June 2 2011

Sue A. Maynard's "Carving the Light" tells the story of three sisters, each with a secret from the others, and each with a load of guilt after the parents are killed in a car accident when they are young.

The book is somewhat episodic, switching points of view to include the sisters' voices as well as that of the driver of the car that killed their parents and an officer's and a lover's.

Maynard's title weaves into the story in a beautiful anecdote of a family tradition and in a farewell scene. I won't include a spoiler there.

I enjoyed the differing personalities of the sisters and their sense of family fun. The book has many funny one-liners and a genuine sense of caring. I liked the way Maynard brought in the LGBT community without making it the focus of either the book or the one character but a part of the world we live in.

Written as a NaNoWriMO book, it holds great potential for a new voice. The author's bio is refreshingly candid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carving the Light Nov. 14 2011
By Nancy J. Arnold - Published on
Format: Paperback
This was a wonderful book. I didn't just read the book -- I lived it! It was a great way to peek into the complicated relationship of being a sister, from trying to measure up to the expectations that you think they have, to worrying about whether or not it truly is an unconditional relationship. You must have been spying on me and my sisters.

Please, please, please write more books Sue!
