HASH(0xb38b31a4) out of 5 stars Wonderful reconstruction of Act 1 by Malgiore Aug. 21 2004

Catone is one of Vivaldi's last operas. The libretto by Metastio is a masterpiece in itself and is set during the Roman Civil War. The music from Act One has never been discovered. The conductor describes his reconstuction of the music in a fascinating portion of the liner notes. I was wholly convinced by his work that I would never have noticed if I had not read about it.

As a typical Vivaldi opera most of the scene is set by recitive and arias--- but what wonderful arias. His orchestration is lush and highly evocative of the words he is setting.

This live performance is performed welll by every cast member and the orchestra. Highly recommended for baroque opera lovers.

HASH(0xb35abdf8) out of 5 stars Vivaldi's Star is Rising May 18 2006

For several years now I have been an avid fan of Handel's operas and oratorios. To me there is nothing quite like the Baroque sound, especially the vocal music. It's heartfelt, balanced, orderly, melodic and contains gravitas while some classical music drifts off into frivolity and sterility (don't get me wrong, I still enjoy Mozart's operas!) I didn't think any composer would challenge my loyalty to Handel but Vivaldi is now running on Handel's heels as it were. It is appropriate that more of Vivaldi's operas are appearing on disk in the last few years. I hope the trend continues. This opera is thoroughly enjoyable. The music is vintage Vivaldi, which is to say grand. The singing is superb and the arias are a nice, healthy length something I always enjoy while the recitatives are thankfully brief overall (to heck with long recitatives!) For a live recording the quality is very good. Like I said if you enjoy Baroque vocal music like me, Handel in particular, you owe it to yourself to delve into Vivaldi's operas. The water's fine folks!
