I was never a big fan of Chaplin, being a Keaton, Arbuckle, Lloyd, Linder, and Langdon fan. But I was impressed by the packaging of this file and the contents.
These 12 prints are very nice and you can tell they were lovingly restored. The earlier ones are more chaotic but when you get down to The Immigrant you see a great comic at work. I really enjoyed the Documentary of "Chaplin's Goliath" and look forward to "The Gentleman Tramp" documentary. The printed materials, and DVD housing are nice features as well. Beware cheap label prints. Image Entertainment has never let me down before. Enjoy!

Just thought that I'd add that I recently got a copy of the 2013 rerelease of this set and there were no booklets in the case (there are supposed to be two). I don't know if mine was a fluke or if they've been dropped for this time around. The package is a regular sized keepcase with the four discs stacked as well. Great set anyways...

11 Comedies, One Drama, and Two Documentaries
Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2014Verified Purchase
This set of DVDs contains all 12 short films Charlie Chaplin made for Mutual Studios between 1916 and 1917. He performed in, wrote, directed and edited all of them, and he put tons of hard work into every aspect of them to make each one as great as it could possibly be. Chaplin was known to do hundreds of takes to get a scene just right, and he would stay awake all night to edit his films, meticulously picking out the best takes of each scene.
11 of the 12 shorts Chaplin made for Mutual Studios in 1916 and 1917 were comedies, and great comedies. In fact, they're still fresh and hilarious almost 100 years later! The picture quality is not perfect, but still remarkably sharp and clear considering the age of these films. Many films made by other actors during this era have since deteriorated to the point of being irretrievably lost. Thank goodness Chaplin's works have not only survived, but were in good enough condition to be digitally restored to a reasonably close semblance of how they must have looked in theaters when originally released.
One film in this set that I would consider more of a drama than a comedy is "The Vagabond". It's not bad, but it's not really a comedy like the other films. "The Immigrant" and "Easy Street" have a some moments of effective melodrama, but for the most part these are very funny comedies, just like the rest of Chaplin's films from this period. If I were to describe all the comedy highlights from the 12 films in this set, this review would wind up being book length. So, just watch these films and find all the great comedy scenes yourself.
Each film runs about 25 minutes. They seem to be projected at a speed that's faster than real life, but maybe that's how Chaplin intended them to be seen. (There was no true "correct speed" for films of this era, as both cameras and projectors were hand-cranked.)
Proper, fitting music scores are very important in silent cinema, so it's good that all 12 films have excellent music scores composed and conducted by Carl Davis especially for these films. (Cheap public domain releases of silent films are often undermined by randomly-selected music tracks that have no connection to the action on the films they're accompanying.)
This is a 4-disc set. The 12 Chaplin short films are on the first two discs. They're all in consecutive order, and each film is preceded by a brief introduction with some interesting information about the making of the film. There are two additional discs of bonus material. Disc 3 has a first-rate feature-length documentary about the life of Charlie Chaplin from 1975 called "The Gentleman Tramp", narrated by Walter Matthau. The disc includes two slightly different versions of the same film. Disc 4 is a documentary called "Chaplin's Goliath", about Eric Campbell, a recurring villain and co-star in Chaplin's Mutual films.
You could waste your money on cheaper versions of Chaplin's Mutual films with missing footage, muddy picture quality, cropped sides and ill-fitting music tracks, but if you want to actually see these classic comedies as Chaplin intended, and actually ENJOY them, spend just a little bit more and buy this authorized box set from Image Entertainment.

2014 update- Get the new Blu-ray, David has even more improvements.

***2014 update***
Get the new Flicker Alley Blu-ray that David Shepard put out! Chaplin's Mutual Comedies . David has out-done himself on ONE AM! Now we have a razor sharp image in addition to the restored 7 minutes. You would think it was filmed yesterday!
-----original review 2006--------
David Shepard gave a sneak preview of these new DVDs at the Niles-Essanay Film Museum's Edison Theater on June 23,2006. I must say that while the last DVD restoration was great, this one keeps that same excellent film transfer, but adds more missing footage & title/dialogue cards from newly discovered prints.
ONE AM has the biggest improvement with a total of over 7 minutes of additional footage, I was not able to do a side-by-side comparison but there were scenes I did not remember. I do not want to spoil the comedy surprises of new footage here, you will have to enjoy it yourself.
Other shorts such as THE RINK included new comedy bits and title / dialogue cards that helped the flow & understanding of the story.
The bottom line is that this restoration does not improve on the already sharper picture quality of the previous release, but it does add missing footage not seen in the U.S. since the films' original releases.
***UPDATE 7/20:***
I have now had a chance to do a syncronized side-by-side comparison. While all of the other shorts are restored as mentioned above, adding new footage to the existing transfer, ONE AM is a totally new transfer.
My reaction to this new transfer is mixed. The big plus is a total of 7 minutes of new material added through out the short! In addition, the old transfer was from a print that was matted on the sides to add a soundtrack, causing a tall & thin picture. This new transfer restores the original square framed picture, adding to the sides of the picture. The negative side to this new transfer is that the complete full frame print is from a negative that is a couple more generations away from the original camera negative. This is most noticable in the opening (and longer) taxi scene. Picture details in the taxi are lost in the blacks, where the older transfer shows some vehicle details.
In a conversation I had with David, he said that trying to add the new footage to the existing footage on this title was too jarring, plus the sides of the picture were missing on the old transfer. The decision was made to go with the complete print for the whole transfer. It should be noted that the bulk of the short that takes place inside the house does not look bad and the benefits of the added picture to the sides are a big plus in keeping the new transfer.
David also stated that he was working on restoring Chaplin's Keystone comedies! If it is a David Shepard project, it is well worth getting.

Get The 1997 Image DVDs Instead
Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2016Verified Purchase
This 90th Anniversary edition has interlacing "combing" lines whenever fast movement occurs. The original 1997 Image DVDs do not have this problem. Also, Michael Mortilla's wonderful music is sorely missed on this box set. Great movies, but get the 1997 versions instead (volumes 1, 2 & 3). The Flicker Alley Blu-rays are washed out and move too slow and look like stop-motion photography, so go with the original Image DVDs.

An unwanted second copy
Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2010Verified Purchase
Having received one copy of this video, I was quite surprised to receive a second copy when after ordering some books. It seems that, when I ordered the books, my Amazon "shopping cart" AUTOMATICALLY included the Chaplin set of videos in my "shopping cart" even though I did not want or order the video set again. Although I saw the Chaplin set in the "cart" I assumed it was simply there as a record of what I had PREVIOUSLY ordered and ALREADY RECEIVED. As it turned out, my assumption was wrong, and since the Chaplin video set is from "overseas," it is not returnable. I view this as a deceptive and exploitative marketing initiative, and it WILL discourage me from ording from Amazon in the future. Amazon benefitted in the short run by selling another copy of the video, and will suffer in the long run as a result of my displeasure and distrust of the Company's selling policies.
Not, mind you, that I think any of this will really matter to Amazon. I'm writing the review simply to express my feelings.

Nice set!
Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2009Verified Purchase
I was introduced to Chaplin's Mutual comedies as a kid, when I bought an 8mm film copy of "Easy Street" from Blackhawk films back in the late 1960's. I was totally hooked. Since then I have taped "Easy Street" off of Television (A&E network) and my daughter bought be an inexpensive boxed set of Chaplin short subjects for Christmas that included "Easy Street." Both prints were edited to disguise the fact that the man who menaces Edna Purviance toward the end of the film is a drug addict. This always bothered me. I wanted a complete copy of the film, like I had when I was a kid. So when this edition went on sale, I jumped at it. I was much more than satisfied. Not only was the print of "Easy Street" complete, but the contrast and definition were much better than I ever knew existed. You can even see the milk pouring out of the baby bottle in the worship service scene at the beginning of the the film. I always knew that was happening as it is inferred by Charlie's reactions, but I can't remember seeing a print of the film where you can really see it.
All of the films in this set are of the same high quality (given their age), both technical and artistic with high quality music accompaniment that fits the action with out being so broad as to be "cartoonish." I even enjoyed the documentary on Eric Campbell, an actor I always wondered about, as he was featured so prominently in these films and then was tragically killed soon after their completion.
There are not many silent films that I would recommend to someone who has never seen a silent film and might be skeptical of whether they could enjoy something out of so distant a past, but these comedies are a great place to start. Chaplin raised the art of silent film making to it's pinnacle in his day and can still be richly enjoyed in ours.
