HASH(0x9c0fd108) out of 5 stars Henry Mancini at his best June 11 2012
By William P. Mackey Jr. - Published on
Format: Audio CD
I grew up hearing the RCA LP edition of Henry Mancini's Charade soundtrack. Was thrilled to receive the complete original soundtrack! 77 minutes of Manicini's best. Not only the well known songs arranged for release on the soundtrack, but the more subtle and quiet pieces that underscore and make the film so memorable and exciting. The sound is superb for music recorded in 1963. From the opening title music to the closing music, Charade is guaranteed to delight.

HASH(0x9bdcffa8) out of 5 stars MANCINI MAGIC Sept. 18 2012

At an early age, Mancini's soundtracks for Peter Gunn and Mr. Lucky introduced me to what I would learn later was called California Jazz. Likewise, his soundtrack for Charade offers some great jazz-based scene cues and a title song that became very popular. However, it was not until Intrada produced this new comprehensive CD release that I was finally able to really enjoy this music. The CD's audio quality is superb so it is easy to hear just how well Mancini's compositions set the mood in Stanley Donen's excellent romantic mystery thriller. Recommended.

HASH(0x9bf77a14) out of 5 stars Charade the Complete Original Soundtrack Nov. 8 2012
By david aames - Published on
Format: Audio CD
Unedited, complete musical soundtrack of the movie, "Charade". The sound quality is not up to the level of the original, re-recorded RCA Victor, version, but includes the many variations of the title track, missing from the 1963, RCA release, and 2 versions of "Bistro", not expected. Mancini, many times, specifically recorded his own soundtrack albums, often limiting certain versions songs, this release corrects this. Hopefully, more Mancini soundtracks, and perhaps John Barry soundtracks will become available in future releases. It would be even better, if the DVD versions of these movies had the capability to just play the music score.

HASH(0x9beb3aec) out of 5 stars An Absolute Must Oct. 23 2013

Those of us who bought the RCA soundtrack of the wonderful film Charade were probably very disappointed. The album contained none of the underscoring (i.e., the suspense and chase music) which contributed so highly in making this film virtually Hitchcockian – humorous, romantic, and exciting. Despite Henry Mancini’s considerable skill as a film composer, his fame is dependent on his talent as a pop instrumentalist, along with film songs that were major hits (Moon River, The Days of Wine and Roses, etc.). So it isn’t at all surprising that the original soundtrack album consisted of mostly dance music (admittedly part of the complete score).

What is also surprising is that it took nearly 50 years to rectify this slight. At last, Intrada has given us the complete score with all the music Mancini composed. I’m particularly pleased that the recorded sound is fine, with no obvious loss of fidelity. One only has to listen to Mancini’s score for Wait Until Dark (FSM limited edition) to realize what a sophisticated composer he was. The purposeful use of mistuned piano strings (which ramps up the anxiety) and the use of quartertones to give menacing disquiet to the film’s atmosphere are the marks of genius. This new recording of Charade is an absolute must for serious collectors and advocates of great film scores.

HASH(0x9bdd1060) out of 5 stars It's About Time May 16 2014

Intrada Special Collections are a godsend for those who have wanted soundtracks for movies of Hollywood's golden and silver ages. This is the treatment for "Charade" that aficionados have been awaiting since 1963. It's NOT a reissue of the RCA Victor album (LPM/LSP-2755); as far as I can tell, this is the original underscore in its entirety (28 cues with a running time of 77:53), beautifully remastered, with informative liner notes by Jeff Bond. For those who love the movie, the cues will immediately jog the images in place. Yet Mancini's work stands firmly on its own as a musical statement: for its sheer variety in melody, tone, and instrumental choices, this is arguably one of his best scores. Grab it while you can, before it runs out of print and triples in price.
