I saw this movie at a film festival and was prepared to sleep through it. But I was so surprised at the powerful effect it had on me. I walked out of it like a guy who didn't know what had hit him, and now, several months later, I still find myself thinking about it. The story of these hockey players is not what one would expect. Yes, you get some awesome fights, hits, blood, etc. and a lot of great laughs too, but by the end of the film, you're not sure if you should bawl your eyes out like a baby or just go to bed and never come back out. Powerful. Dynamic. Recommend it 110%

At least that's what the message on the Laval Chiefs' website says... and as far as the Chiefs overall hockey tactics go, I'd have to agree.
I had no idea what to expect from this movie, and it initially seemed like it was glorifying the more extreme side of our proud sport - but this is not quite the case. This neat documentary depicts the lives of the hockey goons "drafted" by a semi-pro league team, the Laval Chiefs. For those who don't know, a "goon" is the go-to player when it comes to fighting and rough play - really rough play - rough play to the extent that it isn't hockey anymore. Don't get me wrong, hockey is and should be a tough sport - but not like the Chiefs play. This movie does a great job showing how this style of playing affects these goons and how, in the end, it just isn't worth it for most players. I'm very much reminded of Dave Morissette's brief career as an NHL goon and the backlash following his not making the cut.
Do not expect much actual hockey in this movie, however - the focus is almost entirely on the ridiculous fights and the personal lives of the players. Humorous but sobering, all in all this is a pretty decent hockey documentary.

I bought this dvd because I went to school with one of the characters (Tim Leveque). I had to see it. What I found was an interesting story about playing semi-pro hockey. It is well done and gives any Canadian person , who hoped to play hockey as long, as possible (hoping they could make it to NHL someday), some of the stops they might have to make. Keeping in mind as long as u love playing the game, who cares where u r playing! Tim is a true "character", and really is a good guy ,but probably misunderstood. I even went waterskiing with him when he lived in Vydon Acres in high school. Good documentary. Also feel a little sorry that Bajurny didn't get to play more in the playoffs, but such are the sacrifices,I guess. (as a goalie who played to Jr.B. I know the sacrifice u take for the team).

Wow, what a great movie. First I have to admit my roommates and I (all hockey players in college) bought this DVD expecting to see something along the lines of SlapShot, and that is not what this was about at all. Yet, I just finished watching it for the second time today (the first day we received it). Incredibly thought provoking, and extremely well done. I cannot say enough about how well the documentary gives you a glimpse into the lives of the players. As someone who plays and understands the reality of this specific league the movie accurately portrays the internal struggle the fighters must face everyday wondering if they are real hockey players or just circus shows brought in to fight. It is exciting, funny, and sad. Highly, highly recommended.
