Product Description

Written by Arthur C. Clarke and hailed as a revolutionary work of science fiction since its publishing in 1953, Childhood’s End follows the peaceful alien invasion of Earth by the mysterious “Overlords,” whose arrival begins decades of apparent utopia under indirect alien rule, at the cost of human identity and culture.

This SyFy Channel offering is all about when nice aliens come to Earth, they are non violent, non threatening and see us as children who need to be guided to get along better. So they offer us the deal of a lifetime, just let them rule and they will end poverty, inequality, illness, war, intolerance and make Earth an actual Utopia.

The 'Earth Supervisor' is Karellen played with imperialistic understatement by Charles Dance, he selects one farmer to be the spokes person and his mouth piece and this is Rick Stormgren (Mike Vogel ' 'Under The Dome') and he is used to convey to the World what our dear Overlords want us to do and what they are going to do in return. It seems too good to be true but when you have got it so good why bother rocking the boat. Some obviously do and that is covered too and includes a feisty part for Colm Meaney.

This is really well made, the SFX are incredibly good and the acting all rather top form too, the real strength is the story and how it weaves so many things into the plot but does it both subtly and ‘in your face’. I thought it was great and just flew by.I hope that we can expect more TV of this calibre from SyFy now– recommended.

The book was excellent - picturing how helpless we would be if an alien race with vastly superior technology were to turn up. And the turnaround, leaving you feeling sorry for the aliens, was inexorable and strong. Yet this rendition added loads of irrelevant "relationship" dross which completely masked the real story. When the reality of the situation was revealed, I missed it because it was presented as if it were just a bit of background information. Far too many guns, far too much violence, total reliance on glitzy graphics, as in all American films, resulting in a complete disregard for the story itself.

Done, obviously, on a much lower budget than big screen special effects movies, this one has much more impact than most of those. "Childhood's End" has been a long time coming.
I, for one, am glad it finally happened. To all the people involved with it . . . Thank you. Well done!

I never read the novel on which this was based, but it comes across as a faithful depiction of a big-concept story from some decades ago. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
