Product Description

Product Description

The United States Civil War began in 1861 and ended in 1865. While it was a difficult time for our country, they had many important yet simple bits of knowledge that deserve to be resurrected. Back when they couldn’t run to the corner market for cough syrup, they knew how to make their own. Taking nothing away from our 21st century luxuries, sometimes it just feels good to do something the old fashioned way!

I'm keep this book handy as a writers' reference. However, I would enjoy even if I didn't write historical fiction just because I love trivia.

HASH(0x9dae1d80) out of 5 stars Interesting but historically sketchy Sept. 27 2013

I love "housekeeping" books from the 19th and early 20th century. I think they offer an invaluable insight into the hardships and creativity of life in that time. That is very true of this collection. But I was also trained as an historian and sloppy research puts me on my guard. The author says she "rediscovered" these tips --- where? How? What sources are used? That information is not provided. In several places the tips mention products, for example, the soap Sapolio, that were not available until after the Civil War, so why are these referred to as "Civil War" tips?? Enjoy this book if you are interested in past housekeeping, but be cautious of its historical accuracy.

HASH(0x9f58712c) out of 5 stars Fascinating! Dec 15 2012

We take so much of our modern life-style "for granted". Lights - no cleaning the lamp chimneys. Heat - don't have to lite a fire 2-3 hours in advance . Enough detail and thought given that this is truly a "textbook" level.

Well-worth the time and trouble to add to your library, particularly to put some "flesh" on some historical "bones".
Strongly recommended.

HASH(0x9e56e890) out of 5 stars history with a twist of entertainment April 10 2013

This book would make an excellent gift to a history fanatic or someone needing to research lifestyles from periods during the Civil War.

From what I can tell (recalling lessons from grade school and college) the book is most definitely accurate and tales about life back then certainly serve as entertainment.

As a twenty something year old reader, it does bring up question as to how the heck they kept going having so many limited resources. Seems technological advances combined with our society's lack of creative would make current day citizens in awe of life during the Civil War.

HASH(0x9dad7edc) out of 5 stars Eye-opening July 18 2013

This book gives you a glimpse into the daily life of a Civil-War era housewife, who had almost no manufactured cleaning materials or medicines to use. But somehow there was ample use of strong chemicals such as carbolic acid, lime, opium, and many more in daily life. It's interesting to read, in small doses. A curiosity.

Having been around for a number of years I found this compilation of herbal and old wives tales of taking care of ourselves when no one else was around or we couldn't afford anyone else to do it for us. Very enjoyable and reminiscent of the good old days.
