Product Description

They were one the Only Band That Matters! Of course, that was when punk rock had to raise a ruckus to get noticed and restless youth turned to pop stars for political perspective. In retrospect, Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, and Topper Headon (the latter occasionally supplanted at the drum kit by Terry Chimes) didn't have all the answers. But they posed apt questions and had the grand sense of scale that their punk pathfinder rivals lacked--save accidental nihilists the Sex Pistols. Clash on Broadway encases 63 tracks on three discs and comes with an instructive booklet. From the charge-the-gates early sides ("Career Opportunities," "Hate and War," "White Riot") through their later more-textured efforts ("Straight to Hell"), with some nifty odds and ends thrown in for good measure ("1-2 Crush on You," a previously unreleased cover of "Every Little Bit Hurts" that shows the heart behind their dogma), this box puts the band in perspective. --Steven Stolder --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

this is the long-awaited compiliation, that's got it all, the complete works,
i'm sure this will insult a few old-skool punks, but i find their early tracks, ie, hate & war, protex blues, garage land, sound juvenile, like someone practicing in their garage for when they make real music, & maybe some may argue that tracks such as london calling, capital radio, etc, were too commercial.
i think the clash boys were real dark horses, with their swaggering attitude & (you can take the boy out of, but you can't take the ...... out...) brixton boys personas, the output of their work is genius, joe strummer being an active force, what came across to me was his passion in his beliefs, and his very real "take no sh.." attitude to the institution/powers that be, they possessed an amazing insight into the workings of this world, and were singlehandedly instrumental in influencing me in being openminded and not just believing what i was told, but to "look out" as it were, and this has always been with me.
so, for me, their efforts were definitely successful! joe was and is a true legend, and one of my heroes!

The Clash are one of the all time greats, and their legacy is captured almost perfectly with this best of (like all 'best of's there are ommissions-'Remote Control' and 'Guns on the Roof'?),and the 3 CD box set is packed full with fantastic songs taken from their first five albums (theres nothing off 'Cut The Crap')and these are interspersed with live tracks,one-offs and differing versions of some tracks. Debut album 'The Clash' and the legendary 'London Calling' are the most represented here, and the layout takes you from The Clash's early days in the 70s where they helped kick off punk rock in Britain to their experimenation phase with 'Sandinista!' and 'Combat Rock'.
Best Tracks-erm.....CD1:'Complete Control','Garageland','White Riot','English Civil War','I Fought The Law','Jail Guitar Doors'
CD2:'Safe European Home','Stay Free',,The Guns Of Brixton',Lost In The Supermarket','Death or Glory','Bankrobber'
CD3:'Somebody Got Murdered','Police on My Back','Ghetto Defendant','Rock The Casbah','Straight To Hell', 'The Street Parade'

Before I got this, I had never really heard the Clash (excluding Rock the Casbah, Should I Stay...etc), and as a punk and rock fan, that is unacceptable. So I got this box set.
Disc One covers their early years, with every song from both versions of their first album (except one or two) on here, as well as some other stuff, like a great live version of I Fought the Law. This one gets four stars.
Disc Two covers Give'em Enough Rope an EP whose name escapes me at the moment, and London Calling. The Give'em Enough Rope and EP tracks are good (my favorite being Gates of the West). Then comes the best part of the set - the London Calling tracks. Each London Calling track stands out, and show just how good this band was. It would be impossible for me to describe these tracks here - I'd have to make a whole new review. This disc gets 5 stars
Disc Three covers Sandinista! and Combat Rock. This is weakest of the three discs, by far. Only a few songs from Sandinista! stand out to me (though, to be fair, those that do stand out to me, I love). I only really listen to four of the Combat Rock songs here - their popular sings, and Straight to Hell. This one gets 3.5 stars.
The discs came in a double disc case, along with a nice booklet full of liner notes, as well as one with lyrics (though some songs are missing lyrics). Everything comes packaged in a small cube. Nothing fancy, but it works.
If you really want to get a good view of the Clash, I recommend this set (then get London Calling).

Forget the Essential Clash set - for about the same price buy this 3 disc set used on Amazon - The remastering is glorious, and The Clash never sounded better. IT'S NOT A LIVE ALBUM! which is probably a good thing - originally released as a celebration of the Clash's legendary week in NY this is the greatest hits ++ set you've always wanted. I agee that you probably want the entire London Calling CD (the Sgt Pepper of punk) but this set ROCKS!
