HASH(0x9d26418c) out of 5 stars The last good album they ever made Sept. 19 2014
By Agile1986 - Published on Amazon.com
I decided to pick up this album after hearing so many people telling me that I would love In Flames, after becoming familiar with my overall tastes. I have to say that this album is definitely worth the purchase for what it is, and I have no regrets at all.

I am not going to get too specific with songs, but I have to say that “Pinball Map” and “Only For The Weak” are two of my personal favorites from this album. The occasional use of melodic keyboards to sync with the usual drums and guitar solos is always a plus that adds to the feeling, emotion and complexity of any kind of rock-based music in general. However, I feel like some of the songs on this album make me tempted to skip to the next, seeing as it can sometimes drag on, but oh well. Still, it is obvious to the listener the In Flames really worked hard on this album as a whole, and there is no way to really sell this one short. However, I will also be honest as to say that album is definitely the last installment in their discography with which In Flames stayed somewhat true to their melodic death metal roots, and then shifted more towards an almost *SHUDDER* metalcore sound with each album they have made since. Plus, when I saw them live, they surprisingly played only one or two songs from this album, and seemed to focus more on their newer stuff. It was somewhat of a disappointment.

As good of an album as this is, there is a reason Dark Tranquillity are considered the fathers of melodic death metal, and In Flames are not. There are also some more recent bands out there such as Children of Bodom, Insomnium and Blackguard who seem to have more or less picked up the slack in the genre. But in a general sense, there is no reason for this album to not be in the collection of anyone who considers themselves a fan of melodic death metal. If you consider yourself as such, then by all means – buy it!

Possibly my favorite In Flames album. They are ALL so good! Any real In Flames fan should simply have every album. It's easy to make a Best of playlist for these guys, just put all songs in it xD Standouts such as Bullet Ride, Pinball Map, Suburban Me and Square Nothing are thick with the melodicism and the powerful ass kicking that have helped this band rise to the very top of the metal pile. Creative and unique lyricism, visualization instead of story telling... everything! *auralgasm* god I love these guys.... their music fires on all cylinders, definitely a finely tuned machine.

Im not the biggest fan of the whole melodic death metal thing but I cant deny greatness when I hear it. Clayman is a great disc along with Whoracle and colony In Flames have created something special. Not being a big fan of the melodic thing these 3 caught me by surprise and I love it!!!
